His eyes crinkled at the side as he slowly, as though not to spoke me, lowered his head down and brushed his lips across my forehead. A move that I fell more in love with every time he did it. His lips lingered there, making my eyes flutter close. If he noticed the way my body froze, he didn’t let on. I wanted to lean into him, but I refrained. I still didn’t want to go there.

I couldn’t.

Pulling away first, I glanced up at him through my dark lashes. “Who is actually here?” I asked as we stepped up to the ticket booth.

“Asher, Haley, and me.” Cam pulled out his wallet to pay for my ticket. I placed my hand over his, stilling him.

“You don’t have to buy my ticket. I can get it.”

“I know, but I want to.” His eyes never left mine as he handed the cash to the teller. “Besides, what kind of date would I be if I let you buy your own way in.” He winked.

“What do you mean date?”

“Didn’t Haley tell you this was a double date?” Cam’s hand hovered behind my lower back but never touched me as we moved through the food trucks. Pictures of cotton candy, funnel cakes, and caramel apples lined the sides.

“No.”

He chuckled at my response and I’m sure at my face. “Well, that’s probably because it isn’t. I was kidding. Asher’s parents and Nix are here, too. Stacey and I ran into them. I volunteered to come get you.”

“Oh,” I said, a little more disappointed than I would like to admit. Not that I wanted a date.

I needed to make up my damn mind. I was annoying myself.

“Although, if you want, we can make it a date.” He stopped and hooked a finger under my chin, tipping my face up. My breath caught in my throat and I flinched from the small contact even though treated me with care. I hated how I froze when he touched me

Would that ever stop?

His dark brown eyes flared with an emotion I couldn’t name, but he dropped his hand, grabbing my hand to lace our fingers together. “Is this okay?” he asked, lifting our joined hands.

I didn’t know the answer to that, but I didn’t want him to stop touching me yet. I nodded, surprised my palms weren’t sweating from nerves. His eyes sparkled and pulled me closer as we walked through the crowds. “One day you’ll let me take you out on a date.”

“You seem so sure.”

“I’m sure that I want you.”Cocky.

“What if I don’t want you?”

“You do.” He squeezed my hand.

I huffed out a laugh at his confidence. If this is how he acted with other women, it was no wonder he used to be a playboy. “How do you know?”

“You didn’t cover up your freckles.” Cam glanced down at me, running the pad of his finger along my cheek softly. My feet shutter stepped. “You’re beautiful.”

“I didn’t feel like putting makeup on. It wasn’t because of you.”

“You don’t need makeup. Come on, everyone is up here.” He jutted his chin toward a few picnic tables sitting off to the side of the stadium and food trucks. He slowed his steps as we got closer. My stomach dropped when he let go of my hand, but he quickly placed it low on my back, actually touching me this time. The heat from his hand bled through my tank top.

“This okay?” He leaned closer to my ear as he spoke. Warm breath fluttered across my skin. I resisted the urge to close my eyes. Instead, I nodded once and moved toward the table full of people staring at us.

Stacey and Haley both wore shit-eating grins as we approached. Cam stood directly behind me with his hands on my shoulders. I couldn’t help but noticed I didn’t stiffen at the touch.

Which made me stiffen at the touch.

I’m such a mess.

He squeezed my shoulders once and then dropped his hands, making it easier for me to breathe.

“Hey! I thought you would never get here.” Haley slid over and patted the spot between her and Asher. I raised a brow and took a seat.
