I saw the recognition in her eyes when I mentioned Leo. She remembers me, I know she does. But I’m willing to play along for a bit longer. It’s the least I can do after the way things ended between us.
Her hands fidget in her lap as I drive, and I reach over and take one in mine, resting it on her thigh. Her startled gaze flicks to me when I do it, but she doesn’t pull away.
My smile is impossible to hide, so I don’t even bother.
“Where to now?” she asks.
“The next time I saw you was at the grocery store. You were wearing a yellow sundress with white polka dots, it was so fucking cute.” From the corner of my eye, I see her blush crimson. “I didn’t approach you that day either though, I was with my mom, and I didn’t want to answer the million questions that would inevitably come if I walked over and started talking to a girl. But I watched you. You picked out a packet of caramel popcorn, then put it back in favor of a bag of mini peanut butter cups. They still your favorite?” I ask.
“They are,” she mumbles.
Excellent. I have some big plans later on for a packet of those and her beautiful new curves.
“What was that?” she asks out of the blue.
I glance at her. “What was what?”
She smirks. “That look on your face. You were having dirty thoughts, I can tell.”
I chuckle. “Busted.”
“Well, don’t start holding out on me now,” she goads.
Swiveling my head toward her, I grin. “Oh no, I don’t want to scare you off. If you’re lucky, I might tell you after I’ve sufficiently jogged your memory.” I wink.
She rolls her eyes and turns her attention out the windshield.
I give her hand a little squeeze as I pull the car into a space in the empty parking lot at the lake. Her eyes fly to my face, and I smile.
This time she doesn’t hesitate when I offer her my hand. She places her palm in mine and we walk to the edge of the water.
“This isn’t the grocery store,” Margo murmurs quietly.
I smirk and turn to face her. “It most certainly is not. This is where we officially met. You were out there.” I point to a spot in the water, then to the grass beneath our feet. “And I was standing right here.”
Her eyes sparkle as I continue to speak.
“I tossed my shirt on the ground, dove into the freaking coldest water in the world, then swam over to you to introduce myself. You were understandably speechless, as I was even more attractive with my hair slicked back and water dripping down my bangin’ abs.”
“Bangin’?” She bursts out laughing. “Who even says that?”
“Me, apparently.” I chuckle and lift my shoulder in a half-shrug. “So, has your memory been jogged yet?” I ask with a raised brow.
Margo blushes and looks away. “Nope, I don’t recall any bangin’ abs in my past.”
I narrow my gaze on her as she refuses to meet my eyes. Reaching for her, I gently grasp her jaw, then turn her chin back to me. “Not even dripping wet ones?”
She swallows and squeaks, “Nope.”
Shaking my head, I take her hand and lead her back to my car. She remembers me all right, now I just have to get her to admit it.
Chapter Four
I totally remember the day we met. It flashes in my mind, and it feels like it happened yesterday. His head popped out of the water just a foot in front of me, then he stood… Yeah, I definitely remember those abs, I was speechless.
Tyler was the hottest guy I’d ever seen. And yes, the way the water sluiced off his amazing body only made him hotter. He’d introduced himself and stayed by my side for the rest of the day.
It was one of the best days of my life.
