“I was just putting you on. I wasn’t doing anything but soaking in the tub,” she confessed with a smidgeon of guilt in her tone.

Surprised by her behavior, or her humor, so she seemed to think, she had rendered him speechless for a brief moment.

“Christ, sweetheart, you have no idea what you do to me, do you?”

“I can hardly wait to see you tomorrow night.”

“I can’t wait to see you as well. See ya tomorrow,” he replied as he disconnected the call. He repeated his parting words in his head, “See ya tomorrow.” They suddenly sounded lame. He wanted to say more. I love you. I miss you. I can’t go another moment without you. But he chickened out. Another cold shower was in order.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

With still no word from Mr. James or Patrick, confirming they had heard the pregnancy rumor, Elizabeth decided to push it a bit to scoot things along. She purchased a book of baby names to conveniently leave on display in her office for Darcy to see, as a reminder. After placing the book on the corner of her desk, partially hidden under some papers, she rang her assistant’s extension.

“Yes, Ms. Shaw.”

“Can you please bring back the Macy and Marshal files?”

“Sure.”

Within minutes, Darcy stood in front of her desk with the folders in hand.

Elizabeth took them from her. “I just need to quickly see something in them and then you can have them back right away.”

She hoped the woman would scan her desk while she buried her nose in the files. After a few moments, she handed the folders back to her assistant. “Thank you.” Darcy took them and exited the office.

Elizabeth watched her phone display screen, and within seconds, Darcy’s line was busy.

It only took a few moments for her phone to ring. Mr. James’ name flashed across the caller ID.

That was quick.

She let the call go to voicemail. As soon as the light flashed on her phone, she retrieved the message.

“Hi, Elizabeth, this is Mr. James. We need to talk. Call me as soon as you get this.”

She called Nick to let him know what she had done, and told him about Mr. James’ message.
