Page 60 of Keeping Eveline
“Yeah, like if things were getting weird or I come across something I can say, I’m going to get a glass of water.”
Kyle scrunched his nose up in, not disgust, but obvious uncertainty. It was the first time she’d seen him do it and it was adorable. “Maybe, I’m not sure.”
She glanced at her watch, it was getting closer and closer to her start time and she still needed to walk from where he’d parked to the office. “Look, it’s going to have to work for now. If I don’t say it in a combination with something that you drink, like, juice, soda, or water, then I’m fine. The moment I add that beverage reference, you know I need help.”
“For today it will work. I’ll think it over and see if there’s not a better word we can use, okay?”
“Sounds good.” She leaned across and pressed her lips to his quickly. “I gotta go. Be good.” Eveline grasped the door handle when fingers curling around her other forearm halted her.
“Do you have everything?” Kyle asked.
He was referring to the devices to track her and hear her. “Yes, I do, and if you were paying attention to me, you’d see the necklace and earrings.”
Kyle laughed. “Baby, all I see is your beauty. Nothing else.”
Eveline groaned. “Oh my God, that’s so corny.”
“Corny but true. Now go.”
He gave her arm a little push, and she exited the vehicle, the sound of Kyle’s laughter still echoing in her ears.
Ox shifted in the seat of the car, wishing that he was doing the surveillance in a café and not a car, but he wanted to be able to make a quick getaway should Eveline need him. If he was in a café, then he’d be delayed in getting to her.
Nothing exciting had been happening today. Had Gerald decided to finish his little extra business push now that he knew he’d been found out?
That seemed unlikely, but the fact that nothing was happening and everyone seemed to be acting differently around Eveline had red flags waving madly in front of him.
Why were there so many unanswered questions?
So many things that didn’t add up?
The shrill of Ox’s cell disrupted his musings. Julian’s name flashed on the screen. His stomach dropped with the idea he might be ringing for the team to go on a new mission, which was the last thing he wanted to do with Eveline still in danger. “Hey, Julian, what’s up?”
“Kyle, have I caught you at a bad time? I tried the office, and they said you were out on a job.”
“I’m good to talk.”
“Good. We’ve got a large bust happening, and we need some extra hands. Is your team available?”
They’d done a few jobs with Julian and the FBI since they’d started their partnership. Each one had been successful. He and the guys had gone in and out without any issues. This one didn’t sound like it could be that easy.
“How big we talking, and how many of us do you need?”
Silence greeted his question. Normally his response to Julian was affirmative. Like him, the rest of the guys at Alliez enjoyed going back to what they’d done when they’d been in the military.
It was one of the reasons he was looking at bringing on some new guys to help with the jobs they were getting, not to mention these special projects they were doing with Julian.
Now that Growler was engaged, Ox suspected he wouldn’t be as keen to go on missions as he’d once been.
He could understand because he didn’t want to walk away from Eveline. How ironic, that he’d been keen to do more because he’d felt restless and thought he needed extra in his life. Now that it was happening, his personal life had changed.
However, Ox had made a commitment to Julian and the FBI, and he didn’t want to tarnish the reputation of Alliez. So until he’d employed more people, he’d keep his word.
“Something I need to know about?” Julian finally asked.
How did he approach this? Nothing but the truth—that was how.
“There are things changing with me, but as much as that’s happening, I’ve committed to helping you and I know this is what I want to do for Alliez.”
