That can only mean one thing: Yakov killed him. Dr. Jenkins betrayed us all and tried to hurt me and so Yakov killed him.

How many times is Yakov going to have to save me from the brink of certain death?

Without warning, my body contracts. Every muscle in my midsection tightens until I can’t breathe. Can’t speak.

“Luna?” Nik rolls closer to the bed. “Luna, are you okay? What’s happening?”

I can't speak through the pain. All I can do is shake my head. I'm not okay. This isn't okay.

Nik rolls to the door and yanks it open. "We need a nurse in here!”

Finally, the pain eases. I groan. "Contraction. That was a contraction."

I know what they feel like now. I've been through this before.

Nik curses under his breath and opens the door again. “Or a doctor! A fucking janitor would be better than nothing. Now!"

Another contraction is ramping up. I feel it coming. I grit my teeth. “Where is Yakov?”

Nik wheels around, rolling closer to the bed. “Pavel was holding Dr. Jenkins’ family hostage as blackmail. It’s why he attacked you. Yakov went to save them.”

The information is coming at me faster than I can process it. Someone is going to have to explain the last twenty-four hours to me in slow, exquisite detail when this is all over.

“Yakov went to save Dr. Jenkins’ family?”

Nik nods. “He didn’t want them to suffer.”

I grab Nik’s hand, squeezing as the contraction crests.

“Fuck, that hurts,” Nik grumbles. When it’s over, he shakes out his hand.

“Sorry if I don’t feel bad for your pain,” I snap. “I’m going through something here. Without my fiancé.”

“He’s doing the right thing.”

“Fuck the right thing! I want him to be here!”

It’s true—I want Yakov here right now. But I also love that he’s saving innocent people. Underneath all of his threats and bravado, Yakov is a good man. He’s noble. It’s why I’m glad he’s the father of my children.

I’d also be glad if he was here to witness them being born.

A nurse comes in and pulls my blankets back. She takes one look under my hospital gown and blanches. “I’m calling your doctor.”

My doctor… Dr. Jenkins.

I look at Nik. “What the fuck are we going to do?”

“Another doctor,” Nik announces. “Find another doctor. Any doctor.”

“Mr. Kulikov told us to defer to Dr. Jenkins for?—”

“Well, this Mr. Kulikov is telling you to forget that and find someone else,” Nikandr interrupts. “Dr. Jenkins has left the building.”

She rushes out of the room and comes back with the charge nurse. Together, the women shift me to a gurney.

“We’re taking you to labor and delivery,” the charge nurse explains. She’s wearing bright pink scrubs and has a yellow stethoscope. She doesn’t look like the kind of person who would try to poison me and my children, so I take it as a good sign. She looks to Nik. “Are you the father?”

Nik winces. “No, but I texted him. He’s coming as fast as he can.”
