They both knew better than to respond with a no, but he could see by the look on Ash’s face that he wanted to make sure she joined them on that sofa.
There was a time for their dominant sides to come out. That time wasn’t now.
They moved to the sofa and took a seat. Sylvee started pacing in front of them.
Ash turned his head to look at Piers. “Uh-oh.”
“She’s pacing.”
“This won’t be good.”
She stopped, throwing her hands in the air. “You guys make everything a joke.”
Piers fixed his attention on her. “Talk to us, Peachy. What’s going on?”
“I’m not feeling very peachy at the moment.” She raked her fingers through her hair.
“What happened, honey?” Ash’s tone was infused with the brand of tenderness that always soothed her.
Not this time.
In agitation, she sliced a hand through the air. “Are you going to tell me why you called me?”
Piers stretched out his legs. Might as well get comfortable for the sharp side of her tongue. “There is a legal matter on the ranch.”
She narrowed her eyes. “Are you two involved?”
“Absolutely not,” he said at once. “But all the Boot Knockers are involved by default.”
“What is the incident in question?”
“Damn, you’re hot when you’re in lawyer mode.” Ash’s drawled statement made her lips purse.
Piers attempted to calm her by giving her a little information. “The woman in the office is in a bit of trouble. One of the Boot Knockers is involved.”
Ash cut across him. “Let’s talk about happy things. Like…making a baby.”
Sylvee thrust her shoulders back. “Right. Or how you broke your contracts when you failed to use protection with me.”
Piers shifted forward, elbows on his knees. “Who did you talk to?”
“No one. I heard something.”
“In the locker room?”
She gave him a single nod.
Ash reached out a hand for her. “You’re worth risking it all for, Sylvee.”
When she swung her blue gaze from Ash to him, Piers felt the rising tide of her anger.
He stood and approached her. To his relief, she didn’t dart away and allowed him to caress her cheek. “Nothing would make us happier than to see your dream come true.”
Tears flooded her eyes. The depths glimmered, but she didn’t let any fall.
Ash came to her side too, locking his arms around her waist. Both of them crowded close to her, giving her the support she needed to process everything.
Piers’s chest ached from the sight of tears in her eyes. “Baby, I hate seeing you upset. You’re tired. You’re probably hungry. Lie down on the sofa with Ash while I make us all something to eat.”
