Page 49 of Brutal Lies
We sit trying to think up another plan but not succeeding. And I don’t care. All I care about is that we’re getting along. Justin looks less morose; Wyatt is talking and not sulking; Bryce isn’t sneering at every comment; and Pierce isn’t the bully. But most of all, I’m included in their plan. I recall the September day I sat here, wanting to join their Investors Club, and they fought to keep me out. But I can feel a shift in our relationship. Not just how they act toward me, but how they act toward each other.
I slouch against the worn cushion and watch them get along the way they did last summer while I wiped down the tables.
“Maybe we should go get something to eat,” suggests Wyatt.
I shake my head. “I have to study. I have to get As.”
Bryce fills them in on my latest predicament with Rawlins. “I told her we have the answers, but she wants to study anyway. Such a good girl.”
“I’m not a fool,” I tell him lightheartedly. “I’ll take a look at them to see if I’m right or not.”
As we leave Oberlin, I wait out in the doorway as they file out. Wyatt leans in and gives me a kiss. Not hot, just a very sweet and quick kiss on the lips. Bryce follows him and pulls me in with one arm around my waist. His kiss is also fast and playful. Justin holds my hand as he kisses me on the lips and whispers thank you.
And then there’s Pierce. We look at each other, hesitating, not quite sure what to do. I lift my chin and turn my cheek toward him. He pecks me hastily and then pulls back to look into my eyes.
“Don’t study too hard,” he says as they go their separate ways. “We need brainpower to think up a plan.”
