“Mom, we need to talk,” Sky insisted as soon as I shut the front door.
“First, I promised my grandbaby a story before bed.”
“Fine, after you tuck Cam in.”
“Alrighty. Come on, Cam.” Hand in hand, Adria and Cam trotted upstairs.
Sky used the alone time to fill me in on the details Tamia shared during their conversation. Apparently, Spencer wanted Adria to sign a prenup, and she refused. I was just here for support and to make sure they didn’t kill each other.
“Alright, Skylar. The little one is all tucked in bed.” Adria sighed, sitting across from where we were cuddled on the couch.
“Are you ready to tell me what you’re doing here?”
“You already called Tamia. You know why I’m here. Spencer and I broke up,” Adria scoffed as if she was embarrassed that Sky knew the truth.
“Are you okay?” I asked when Sky didn’t.
“Spending time with my grandbaby helps,” she smiled, rubbing her hands together. “Look, I could use a place to stay until I figure things out.”
Sky’s brows hiked because she wasn’t as sympathetic to Adria’s heartbreak.
“I’ll be on my best behavior, Skylar.”
“Your best isn’t good enough.”
“Then I’ll be on your best behavior since you’re so perfect,” Adria quipped.
Sky looked up at me for final approval as if she needed it. Adria was family, so I was following Sky’s lead. I had no room to judge when my own family had their share of bullshit. I gave Sky that look that she hated. The one that said it’s your decision.
“Fine, but this is only temporary.”
“Thank you—both of you.” Adria smiled. I can help take Cam off your hands so you have more time to plan the wedding.”
I chuckled because I wasn’t even sure if Adria could help herself. Everything out of her mouth was rooted in sarcasm, triggering Sky’s elbow to jab at my side for laughing.
“I’m just trying to help.”
“Come on, woman. I’ll show you around,” I volunteered, unsure how this arrangement would work.
I grabbed Sky’s face and kissed her lips before taking Adria to her room.
“Is she always this uptight,” Adria whispered.
“Aye, leave my woman alone,” I playfully warned.
She chose the one closest to Cam’s bedroom because she didn’t want to hear us practicing making a baby. Adria thanked me again for letting her stay before I checked in on Cam and proceeded to my bedroom. Sky stood before the dresser, removing her jewelry in deep thought. Or at least it appeared that way.
“What’s going on with you?”
“My mom popped up, and now she’s down the hall.”
I shook my head, insulted that she thought she could pass this imposter off as my lady. “You’ve been off before Adria showed up,” I explained because this wasn’t even the version of her I met behind the bar at Paradise’s Dream. This person was a stranger.
“It’s been a long day. Please, Mack,” she begged.
Sky didn’t see herself the way I did. She didn’t notice how she stumbled over her words when nervous or how she’d tug at whatever she was wearing when she lied because she was so bad at it that it made her hot from the inside out. She didn’t notice, so she didn’t expect anybody else to.
“I’m going downstairs,” I announced, leaving her alone the way she wanted.
