“Not what?” I challenged.
“You’re a lover boy Quest. When you’re feeling a shorty, you’ll shout that shit from the rooftop. Now you’re being all secretive. What the fuck is up?” Morgan asked, which was a legitimate question. But I made Solana a promise, and that mattered more than their opinions, so I changed the subject.
“I’d love to sit here and spend quality time with you all night, but are we going to figure this shit out or what?” I asked sarcastically.
“I’m ready whenever. You’re the one sitting over there bumping your gums.”
“Unlike you, I got shit to do tonight. Let’s go,” I joked, getting out of the car.
We walked around the neighborhood, coming up on the backside of the row of homes. Not that we stood out anyway, Bella didn’t live in the most upscale neighborhood.
“There’s her car right there. I should carve my name on that bitch,” Morgan spat, pointing at the silver sedan.
“Why do you always want to be destructive? You need some fuckin’ therapy.”
“I’m about to get some. Are you ready or what?”
“Lead the way. This was your bright idea. I’m just here to make sure your ass makes it out in one piece.”
“I thought you’d want to look the bitch in the eye who played you, but I guess you’re getting soft these days laying up with Solana,” Morgan quipped.
I smacked him in the back of the neck, causing his shoulders to hunch, “Watch your mouth.”
Morgan looked at me like he wanted to punch me in my shit, but he wanted Wes and Bella more. Approaching the front door, he took one side, and I took the other. We could hear Bella and Wes arguing, so I gave him a look, asking if he was ready, and Morgan nodded.
Hitting the door with the butt of my gun caused their voices to cease. After a brief pause, footsteps neared and stopped again. It was likely Wes peeping out of the peephole, trying to see who it was. I struck the door a few more times before he finally yanked it open like the idiot he was.
“Stupid ass nigga!” As soon as the door opened, I stuck my foot in it and hit him with my gun.
“What the fuck Quest!” Bella yelled, staring at her brother lying on the floor, clenching his forehead.
“What the fuck is right? You stole from me. After everything?—.”
“After you left me for another woman!” Bella yelled, putting her own spin on the truth.
“Left is a stretch. It didn’t work out, and we broke up. That didn’t have shit to do with Solana.”
“Fuck all that. Where is our money?” Morgan asked, aiming his gun at Wes’s head.
“Fuck you nigga. Go ahead and kill me.” Wes spat, perched on one elbow, still lying on the floor.
Morgan nodded and began moving around the kitchen until he found a small saucepan filled with water and turned the stove on.
“You about to cook this nigga dinner?” I asked.
“I’m about to make this nigga tell us where that money is. You ever smelled burning flesh before?” he asked, turning to Bella.
“Morgan don’t do this,” she pleaded, a lot less angry with him than me.
“You’re forcing my hand, Bella. You know how this shit goes. We have people to answer to, and the only acceptable response is getting that money back,” Morgan explained, what she already knew.
Bella shut her lids as tears streamed down her face. Wes was all the family she had, so she was torn. She didn’t want to return the money but had already lost me. Bella couldn’t take losing Wes, too.
Wes picked up on the same. “Don’t tell them shit, Bella. Fuck that!” he yelled.
“Wes,” she whimpered.
Morgan’s impatience won, and he shot Wes in the leg, causing him to writhe on the floor in pain.
