Not that it’s even an option. I don’t have the luxury of self-pity now.

I cast about wildly, seeking any hint, any clue of where they went. But there’s nothing. Just the fading reek of exhaust and burned rubber.

She’s gone. They’ve taken her from me again.

Rage and anguish war within me. I want to run and fight. Shred flesh and tear limbs.

Calm down and think.

In the darkness of the night, the moon shines down onto the snowy pelt of my wolf, standing on the forgotten road. Mouth open, panting, I stare off into the distance as I reach for the threads of the ties that bind us.

And it hits me now, more than ever: I don’t need to see where they went. I don’t need to pick up her scent.

I can feel her. Gathering myself, connecting to that unbreakable thread, I trot forward.

Hang on, Savannah. I’m coming.

Chapter 26

Savannah

I struggle against the ropes binding my wrists behind my back as Rack paces before me. We’re in some kind of abandoned warehouse, dimly lit by flickering bulbs overhead. Around us are a handful of Rack’s rogue males, watching me with predatory eyes.

“You won’t get away with this again. You freak!” I snarl the words at him. He may have had me weak and compliant before, but not now. Now, my wolf is just beneath the surface. If I get half the chance to loosen these bonds, I’ll be free to shift. And I’ll take his fucking face off.

Not that there’s a lot more damage I could do. Rack’s face is a ruined mess – the scars from Sierra’s attack have healed badly, leaving him disfigured. One eye is missing completely. I feel a swell of pride for my sister, even as despair grips me. She may have wounded Rack, but he still lives to torment me. And probably others. I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s been at his mercy.

He deserves every bad thing that comes his way.

“Why won’t I get away with it?” he rasps. “Do you think they’re coming for you?” He starts to chuckle. “Not going to happen. I was careful not to take you back to Leadmills. Your friends will never find you here.”

I fight the panic rising up my throat as it tightens. I’d fled Steel Lakes to find my own path, only to deliver myself back to this monster.

I bite my tongue, refusing to show any reaction to his taunts.

Screw him!

I won’t give him the satisfaction.

But curiosity gnaws at me until I can’t resist asking, “How did you find me?”

Rack’s face splits into a hideous grin. “You made it easy, little wolf. Did you really think you could just waltz out of Steel Lakes without anyone noticing? I’ve had eyes on that place for weeks, ever since your bitch of a sister smashed my face to a pulp.”

He leans in close, rancid breath hot on my face. “I knew it was only a matter of time before you or Sierra slipped up. It would have been good to get my hands on her…give her a taste of her own medicine. But maybe I’m lucky it was you. Because I would have killed her…slowly…and then cost myself a breeder.”

I jerk away, scowling. Of course he’s been watching and waiting to make his move. The thought of his spies tracking our every move makes my skin crawl.

At least he didn’t get Sierra!

After everything she’s suffered at this psycho’s hands, she doesn’t deserve to go through it again. I’m almost glad I took this bullet for her.

“Don’t look so upset, sweetheart,” Rack croons, trailing a stubby finger down my cheek. “You and I are going to have so much fun together.”

I snap at his hand, teeth grazing his knuckles. He jerks back with a hiss.

“Go to hell,” I spit.

Rack’s amusement vanishes. His hand lashes out, striking me hard across the face. I taste blood as my lip splits.
