“Yeah, she was perfectly healthy then,” I added.

“Then what happened?”Sue asked, brushing her hands over her daughter’s face and hair.

I glanced at Mase.“We don’t know.We locked the front door and left like she said we should. But…”

“We couldn’t leave,” Mason said, lifting his chin and puffing up his chest a little.“So we just sat in the car.Not speaking.”

“Then we heard Tania scream,” I said, turning to Jack.“It was so weird. It was like she was screaming inside the truck cabin, but she was up here.”

I still couldn’t work out how she’d done it, but she’d projected her voice through the gym, outside, and into our truck.

“I think she’s worked a spell she shouldn’t have,” Sue whispered.“And it’s backfired.”

“Which spell?”Jack demanded.

“There’s a book under the coffee table,” I said, pointing to the corner of a page I could see poking out from beneath the heavy wooden table.

“Let me get it,” Sue cried.

We all froze and she grimaced out a smile.“Sorry.But we can’t lose the page.If I’m going to fix this, I need to know which spell she was working that caused this problem.”

I took a step back, getting out of the way of Tania’s tiny blonde mom.

Sue gracefully got to her knees, reached beneath the table, and pulled out one of the biggest books I’d ever seen.

“Are all your spell books that big?”

Jack shook his head.“No.Only the ancient texts.”

I shivered with the inference of the words.Tania had been messing with something she shouldn’t have been, that was obvious.

Sue flipped the book over and stood up, a frown etched into her face.“I don’t understand.”

She moved over to the couch and sat down, staring at the page.“Let me just check.”She spoke softly, white light glowing from her palm.

Then she nodded.“Yes, this was the spell she was casting. But I don’t understand why this would backfire so badly. In fact, I don’t understand why she’d be working it at all.”

I glanced at Mase, whose nostrils were flaring with anger and worry.I suspected mine were, too.

I moved closer, since I was slightly calmer.“Maybe we can help? What’s the spell for?”

Sue was sitting down, as tiny as a fairy, so I sat down on the armchair nearby, not wanting to tower over her.

She glanced up.“It’s a reversal spell.A love spell reversal.”

It was my turn to be surprised.“Huh?”

“She was trying to reverse a love spell on who?”Mase asked, walking closer.

I scrunched up my face, thinking hard.It didn’t make sense, unless… “Oh, shit.”

“What?”Mase demanded.

I jumped to my feet.“It’s the fated mate link. She was trying to undo it.It’s the only thing that makes sense.”

Mase crossed his arms over his chest, his face dark.“Why would she do that?”

“Because she thinks it’s the only reason we want her.She was trying to release us so we could go and find someone else.Fucking hell…” I ran a frazzled hand through my hair.
