The car is smashed in and rolled over on the side of the highway. Glass everywhere.
I don’t answer him. I look in the car, shouting, “Suri. Come on, baby, talk to me, tell me where you are?”
Something deep in my gut tells me she’s not here. I glance down and I see blood. My first thought is NO!
Walking around the car, I take in the scene and check again that she didn’t get thrown. I find her phone laying on the ground. “Fuuuck.”
My fists clench. We didn’t find her body. I can feel it deep in my bones that someone took her. A haze of red starts to tint my eyes.
I have to get her back, in one piece, alive. If someone touched her…they will burn. She’s bleeding…
Through the fog, I hear a faint voice calling my name. Still clenching my fists I try to maintain a clear head, but it’s hard. She’s bleeding…I hear the voice again calling my name. This time I feel hands on my shoulders, shaking me.The haze over my eyes clears a bit and I can see Henry standing in front of me looking a bit concerned. “Fuck, Brendan. Come on man. Keep it together.”
She’s not here. Where could she be? “They took her.”
His face softens a little which pisses me off even more. I don’t need pity, I need him to help me find her. I have to keep a clear head so I ask him, “What did you find?”
“I didn’t find her but they did leave someone behind.”
“Someone?”
“Yeah, I found a body hidden in the bushes. I’m guessing the driver. He’s over here.”
I follow Henry to where he found the body. I don’t recognize him but assume he is one of the drivers from her mansion. Why else would Suri get in the car with him? I squat down to check his pockets. Pulling out his phone, I check the last person he called.
“Henry, do you recognize the name Johann?”
He shakes his head. “No, I can’t think of anybody with that name. But I also can’t help shake the feeling that the name is familiar.”
I feel the same way. Then it comes to me. Mikhail mentioned Johann, a German associate. And it’s the only clue we currently have to find Suri.
Henry and I look around some more to make sure that we didn’t miss anything before we head back.
Before we part ways, I ask Henry, “Call Mikhail and see if you can find more about this Johann? Other than that he is a German associate. I want to know everything about him.”
He nods his head then places his hand on my shoulder, “Yeah, man. But you need to call Kieran.”
I wince at his suggestion, “I know.”
I start the car and head back to the penthouse, Henry’s suggestion running through my mind.
Grabbing my phone, I hover over his number not sure if he will even talk to me. Will he be willing to help me? Fuck it, I need to do it. I hit the call button.
“Brendan?”
When he answers, I feel a rush of relief. He’s still my brother even after Da banished me. We were close as kids until Da thought he should be engaged to Suri. I felt betrayal from everyone and distancing myself was the only way I could survive.
“Kieran. I need your help.”
He lets out a small sigh, already frustrated with me. “Brendan, you know I can’t. Da’s exiled you.”
“Suri is missing.”
“What do you mean Suri is missing?”
I bristle a little when I hear a growl of possession in his voice. This is not the time to get in a pissing contest with him. I need to find her and if he can help me do it, I’ll put up with mountains of shit. I just need her alive.
“You heard me, she’s missing. She called me from the car on the way to the penthouse. I didn’t get any info before I heard the car crash. I’ve been to the site…rolled car, only the driver was left behind. It’s suspicious as hell..obviously.”
