But I put up my hand before he could say something. “No. Don’t talk. Don’t make this worse.”

And with that, I slipped by him, sprinted into my room, and shut the door. Hot tears came down my face, fast and furious, as I slid against the door onto the carpeted floor. I felt incredibly stupid.

A soft knock sounded, but he made no move to come in. It was just as well. The last thing I needed was for him to see me cry.

“Avery, are you okay?”

“Fine. I’m already halfway back asleep. You should do the same. But maybe wash your hand first.” I wanted to facepalm at my comment, but he appeared to take it in stride.

“Yeah, okay. I’m sorry.”

“Me, too.”

“You’re sure you’re all right?”

“Yes. I’m fine, Mason.”
