A nod with satisfaction. “Apparently, you do. Very much.” It’s only our second time tonight, but it’s been a long day for both of us and I need Nicole to rest.

She’s too invested in helping me solve this mystery with the team and I don’t want that kind of pressure on her.

I want to savor the heat of her body. I glide in and out of her slowly, and deeply. But I feel her growing hot and urgent as she grips my biceps, rocking her hips. “Harder. Please.”

I give my woman everything she asks. Slow, deep, hard, tender, demanding. I crave her pleasure.

And I will deliver.

But there’s one thing I’ll never do.

Flipping her on her back, I pin her down, giving her one hard thrust before I pause and gaze into her sparkling green eyes. “You never have to beg with me.”

I pump into her until her thighs shake. Until I fill her with the mind-blowing orgasm she shouldn’t have to chase. Until she’s screaming loud enough to throw me over the edge beside her.

There’s nothing like it. The way she gives herself to me. The way I’ll always give myself to her. The way she fits right here.

There will never be anything like it.

“And you haven’t heard from your father either?” Pamela asks on Saturday morning. I had told her about the gala today and she insisted on seeing me before to ease my mindset.

“No. He contacts Nick every once in a while, but he hasn’t reached out to me. Probably afraid to. I know he cares about me and he worries, but probably feels responsible for some of the things that happened.”

“Did he ever admit to that?”

“Not to me,” I say honestly and a little bitterly. Because he doesn’t open up to me the way he does to my brother.

Pamela nods and makes notes. “Okay. Well, if he does, just make sure whatever it is he wants to talk to you about, you’re mentally ready for.”

Not likely.

“Let’s move on to current relationships. Tell me about Royce. You mentioned on the phone he finally opened up about his ex-wife.”

I sit up, fueled by the subject. “I can’t believe after what she’d done, he won’t tell Angel. Did you know he had to listen to his daughter blame him for the marriage ending? That he was too busy for her? That he stopped making her feel beautiful after she lost her career? And he didn’t say a word.”

Pamela nods. “It sounds right. Children blaming their parents. But Royce probably won’t budge on this one. When it comes to family, people are willing to take all the hits as long as you can save a relationship that depends on it.”

“I don’t get it.”

“Like say if Claire were a long lost parent who abandoned Angel and now wants to get to know her—Royce would probably feel like she has no right, but for his daughter's sake, he’s willing to do it.”

“Long lost parent?”

She shakes her head. “It’s just an example. What I’m trying to explain is, people would go to great lengths in order to protect or maintain a relationship.”

I blink as something hits me. “I’m sorry, can we cut this short? I…really need to get ready for this gala.”

“Of course. Call me Monday. I want to hear all about it.”

The partition in the town car is up as the car heads east on the way to the gala. After waiting forty-five minutes for my vehicle from the valet at last year’s event, I’m not taking any chances. Because, tonight, the minute I’m ready to take my girl home, we’re off.

It’s just us in the backseat. We dropped off Rory with Cora, who graciously offered to babysit tonight since she isn’t going. I heard her tell Nicole that there are only a handful of fake smiles per calendar year she’s willing to dish out and—it being November—she’s running short.

Nicole is leaning toward the window, visibly anxious. Her long silky hair, which is usually straight, is wavy tonight and elegantly pinned at the sides. Her makeup is modest, and her luscious lips glossy and tinged in berry.

It’s rare that I get the wind knocked out of me—and hasn’t happened since my hockey-playing days.
