She grabs her car keys off the counter. “Need help with Rory this weekend?

“I suppose it wouldn’t hurt if you stopped by on Sunday. We’ve got a game Monday so I might schedule a late practice.”

“Noticed you’re out of chocolates,” she points out. Since I usually bribe her with expensive treats even her boyfriend couldn’t find.

“I’ll get you a box. I’m due for another shipment.”

“Then you’ve got a deal. See you Sunday.”

I walk her out and head upstairs.

As usual, my stomach sinks when I walk into my bedroom. Because I still see her in it.

Waiting for me the way she was that last night she was here. Shivering because I was so heartless.

I don't know what the fuck came over me. All I know is that the moment I saw those photos of her, I was outraged. I couldn’t see straight. I couldn’t think.

I thought I was angry with her.

But I’m the only one to blame for her being followed.

It’s three days before I hear from her again. I’ve been good and given her space. She doesn’t need the guilt of not answering my calls.

And it pays off.

Nicole: Will she be at the game tonight?

Royce: Yes. And she has a gift for you.

Tears. I drove her to tears. Can I not do anything right?

I let my best friend embrace me for as long as she needs to after I finally open up to her about everything. Everything except the pregnancy.

That one just needs to wait.

And she’s taking it…well, as expected…with tears. Lots of them.

“I’m sorry, Angel.”

“I’m not mad at you.” She sobs. “I feel responsible.”

I rub her back. “Oh honey, you know no one is to blame but my brother.”

She coughs a laugh. “You have a point.”

We’re standing a few yards away from Coach’s office by the locker room before tonight’s game. I told him I’d be here tonight, and he’d arranged for me to sit with Angel and Rory.

But there was no pressure in coming to see him. He’s been painfully sweet, giving me space.

She follows my gaze to his office door. “Yeah, he’s in there.”

I bite my lip.

Angel perks with interest. “Would you mind…grabbing Rory for me? She’s in there getting her popcorn.”

I start to hesitate but she gives me a little push. "Just go." Then she catches my arm. “But, whatever happens…I don’t want it to affect us. I want to be part of your life always—no matter what.”
