She didn’t hesitate to answer.

“I don’t like the idea of you in danger,” she admitted.

I grinned then as I double parked in front of her apartment and got out.

Opening her door, I said as she slid out, “Why does that sound like it makes you upset?”

She worried her lip so long I didn’t think she’d answer.

Then she did. “Because I like you, Quincy Carter. I like you a lot. And I’m not sure how to feel about that since, if you caught me in the act of doing something illegal, you’d actually arrest me.”

“I would,” I confirmed.

Maybe.

Possibly.

Well, probably only if she was doing something really wrong, like playing with Taite DeRosa’s entrails with an evil smirk on her face.

Then, possibly I’d have to arrest her.

She scoffed and ducked under my arm, heading for her front door, a frown on her face.

Was she mad that I confirmed her thoughts?

I called her name when she would’ve turned around to go inside, while also heading in her direction.

“Hollis?”

She turned, and I couldn’t stop myself from moving forward the last few feet separating us and pressing a kiss onto her cheek. “I’ll see you tomorrow?”

She opened her mouth, and then closed it.

Then, deciding on what she was about to say, she said, “I’m never going to be the good girl, Quincy Carter.”

I snorted. “I never asked you to be.”

With that, I headed to my truck.

She called out to me as I was about to close the door.

“Yes, I’ll see you tomorrow. Whenever you want.”

Whenever I wanted?

That turned out to be at three in the morning.

But she did say whenever I wanted…

* * *

I should be going home.

It was well past three in the morning, yet I found myself driving not back to my place, but to Hollis’s place.

I pulled into her parking lot, took the spot marked as visitors since it was open, grabbed the spare set of clothes I kept in my truck for occasions where I needed to change without going home, and got out.

My gaze automatically went around the area, taking in everything, searching for signs of danger.
