Page 47 of Unseen Danger
The teens sprang apart, their bodies angling toward the K-9 as their eyes bugged out.
“Al, enough. On guard.”
Alvarez stopped vocalizing but held his ground, keeping the gang members in his stare.
Nevaeh swept her gaze over the two teens. “Either of you packing?”
They both glanced at her, then quickly looked away.
“I figured. Unload your weapons here. Set them on the floor slowly and back away.” She jerked a nod at Short Guy. “You first.”
He glared at Tall Guy, then reached under his jacket behind his waistband. Probably a gun.
Nevaeh rested her fingers on her holstered Sig as she watched his hand come around his body, gripping a Glock. “Put it down. Slowly.” She kept her voice firm and steady as she watched his every move.
He placed the weapon on the floor.
“Step back.”
The kid hesitated, then finally brought his defiant glare to her face.
Alvarez growled without her needing to ask him to.
Short Guy’s focus shifted to the K-9, and he backed up a few steps.
“Your turn.” She glanced at Tall Guy, needing to wait for him to back up before she risked approaching the gun on the floor. “I want to see all your weapons on the ground.”
His demeanor was more relaxed than Short Guy’s. Too relaxed.
Nevaeh’s nerves twitched as he swung his right hand around to the back of his waistband like he was going to retrieve a gun.
But his left hand went to his hip at the same time.
Nevaeh lunged at him.
The knife appeared at the same moment he spun toward Short Guy.
She grabbed his left arm, brought it into her torso, and twisted his wrist as Alvarez charged.
“Al, on guard!” She shouted the command just before the K-9 would’ve bit down on Tall Dude’s arm or leg to defend her.
She didn’t have to twist harder for the guy to drop his knife.
She glanced at Short Guy in time to see his gaze dart to his discarded gun. “Don’t even think it. My K-9 would love to sink his teeth into something right now.”
He looked at Alvarez, who gave him a low growl. Short Guy held up his hands and took another step back.
Nevaeh released her hold on Tall Dude and swiftly pushed away, snatching up the knife and gun from the floor while Al held the teens in place with his intense stare.
She glanced around at the people watching. Searched the small crowd that had gathered on the cleared side of the metal detector.
One woman with salt and pepper hair stared, her features pinched with dismay like she knew one of the boys.
“Is that your grandma?” Nevaeh let anger infuse the question as she looked at the teens.
Short Guy dropped his gaze to the floor.
“Are you kidding me?” She glanced at the woman before locking her gaze on the boy. “Haven’t you shamed her enough yet?” Nevaeh would bet anything the grandmother didn’t want to see her grandbaby in a gang let alone witness one of his brawls. She’d probably raised the boy.
