“The phone was last on Reed Street, three blocks north of Fun Land.”

“I’m almost that far now.”

“What street are you on?”

He looked for the street sign as he approached a stoplight. “Jacksonport.” He braked for the red light.

“Take a right there.”

Already in the correct lane, he flicked on his blinker. No oncoming traffic. He zoomed into the turn.

“Then the next left.”

“Got it. Then where?”

“Two streets farther, then a right onto Reed.”

“Great. Thanks.”

“My team and I are on our way.”

“Can you notify her family about what’s happened?”

A pause met his question. “It won’t be necessary to worry them. Nevaeh can tell them afterward if she wants to.”

Now that was confidence. He was starting to really like Nevaeh’s boss.

“Keep me posted.”

“Will do.”

“If you beat me to her, don’t wait. We’ll be right behind you.”

“Yes, ma’am.” His lips angled in an almost-smile as she ended the call.

She had more bravado than he did. And something told him she could back it up.

He hoped she could. Because he wouldn’t mind the help if it meant finding Nevaeh sooner.

He slowed as he pulled onto Reed Street. Not much traffic.

He kept his gaze moving, darting from the road to the sidewalks.

Something dark caught his eye. Not big enough to be a phone, but…

He pulled over to the curb and hopped out of the truck.

Leaning down, he looked at the object. More than one.

Pieces. Smashed, broken insides of a phone.

Frustration heated his chest as he turned back to his pickup.

But this meant he was on the right track. They’d been here, apparently intending to drop Nevaeh’s destroyed phone into the trash receptacle that stood on the sidewalk behind the clothing boutique there.

He glanced up the street. Had they continued from there? Or turned around?

A dark streak on the pavement grabbed his gaze.
