“Scan the badge. Scan this warrant authorizing us to search the premises, and open the door.”
“One moment please.”
Eve waited for the scan, calculated thirty seconds before she gave Roarke the go to cut through security and locks.
The droid barely made it.
“I have verified your identification and the warrant. One moment.”
Locks disengaged, and the door opened.
The droid, built to replicate an attractive blond female in her forties, stepped back. It wore a simple, straight-lined black suit and low-heeled pumps.
“You are authorized to enter. How may I assist you?”
Scanning the foyer, Eve slid a hand under her jacket to the butt of her weapon. “Is Francis Bryce in residence?”
“He is not at this time.”
“Is anyone else here?”
“I am alone on the premises at this time.”
“Where is Francis?”
“I don’t have that information.”
“When did he leave the house?”
The droid’s bright blue eyes fixed as it processed the answer. “Seventeen minutes, twenty-eight seconds ago.”
“Son of a bitch. Did he contact a car service, call for a cab?”
“I don’t have that information.”
“Peabody, tag somebody in the bullpen to check on that, three-block radius from this location. Where is Dr. Nolan Bryce?”
“Dr. Bryce is attending a medical conference in Las Vegas.”
“When did he leave?”
“Eight days ago.”
“When’s he due back?”
“In six days. He extended his time away for a short vacation. Shall I contact him?”
“No. Where does Francis grow his poppies?”
“I’m sorry. I cannot process that question.”
“Does Francis use the roof garden?”
“I cannot verify. My services are not required in that area.”
“Peabody, go grab the field kits, then clear as you go, and check it out. Where else on the premises aren’t your services required?”
“In Master Francis’s laboratory, study, and recreational space.”
