“I didn’t scare her. I just told her, in the future, a tantrum would get her into trouble.”
“I’m surprised she didn’t pepper spray you.”
Kane snorted this time. “Nah. She didn’t seem too worried about my threat. I don’t know for sure, but she might be a Little.”
“Well, Ally would be over the moon thrilled if she was. She is dying to have someone to play with. I can only play Barbies so well. Apparently, I have terrible style when it comes to dressing them.”
Kane grinned.
After hanging up with Luke, he called his friend Logan. He had met Logan when he’d served in the Marines, and they’d become fast friends. Logan served in the Navy as a doctor but was based in San Diego on the Marine base as the resident doctor, and then he brought his skills and education home with him, becoming a skilled surgeon. Lucky for Kane, Logan lived and worked in Bend, a midsized city about forty minutes from Pinebrook. They’d met for dinner a few times since he’d moved from Seattle. The best thing about their friendship was that they could go months without talking because of life being so busy, but as soon as they connected again, they were right back where they left off.
“Well, well, well, if it isn’t Kane Scott on the other end of my phone. What’s going on, brother?”
Logan was just as much a brother to Kane as his actual brother, Damian, even though there was no shared blood. That was how it worked when you were a Marine. Well, Logan had been in the Navy, but he was stuck on a Marine base with a bunch of jarheads, so everyone had still counted him as a Marine.
“Hey, buddy, I have a problem.”
“What’s up?” His tone changed from warm to serious at Kane’s admission of needing help.
They had each other’s backs, no matter what. Always had and always would.
“Long story, but are you working tomorrow by chance?”
“Actually, I’m off tomorrow.”
Kane breathed a sigh of relief. He knew Logan would help him, but if he’d been working, he would have had to drag Haylee into a doctor’s office, and he really didn’t want to do that, considering she seemed so fearful of them.
He explained everything to Logan in detail, noticing the long silence on the other end of the phone when he stopped talking.
“Whoa. Dude. That is a lot. And you’re telling me that you let her get away with having a tantrum and you gave in to her? You’re becoming soft, bro.”
He knew Logan would understand. Fuck.
“Look, she is battered and bruised—I wasn’t about to put her over my knee while she is in pain, and I don’t even know if she has other injuries. But trust me, I thought about it.”
Logan laughed. “Of course you did. But you know I’m happy to come out and check on her. But if I think she needs X-rays or anything, I’m going to make you bring her into the hospital.”
“Fair enough. It doesn’t seem like there’s anything internal, but I’d just feel better having your opinion. And when we arrange a warrant for this asshole, it will be better that she’s been seen by a real doctor… but I suppose you’ll have to do for now.” He grinned, knowing he was poking the bear.
“Listen, fucker, now I’m only coming for her benefit, not yours. Maybe I’ll just load her up and bring her home with me and nurse the sweetheart back to health.”
Okay, now Logan was poking the bear, and the bear didn’t like being poked.
He growled, feeling his possessiveness over her already.
“Okay, okay. Calm down. Shit. I should have known better. I can tell by the way you talk about her that you already like her and feel protective of her. I was just teasing.”
Kane knew that. He didn’t just completely overreact and get all jealous and possessive over a girl he’d just met. Not at all.
“Thanks, Logan. I owe you one. Will noon work for you?”
“Roger that. See you tomorrow, bro.”
Kane hung up and looked up at the clock. It was nearly dinnertime, and he hadn’t fed Haylee anything since lunch. He typed out a text and sent it.
I’m making grilled cheese for dinner. It will be ready in fifteen minutes. Would you like me to bring it to you or do you want to come in here to eat?
Going into the kitchen, he gathered the supplies that he needed to make the sandwiches. Grilled cheese and quesadillas were the most gourmet meals he could cook. His phone vibrated.
