No. He can’t kill them.

Maybe Parker won’t be able to find me. Maybe…

When I focus on Parker and his emotions, I can feel a lot of things. Anger. Frustration. Anguish. But the emotion that stands out the most is determination.

He’s already on his way. And when he gets here, Blaze is going to kill him. Even if Parker kills him, he’ll only come back to life. Eventually, he will succeed.

I run my fingers through my hair in frustration.

What am I going to do? How can I protect my mate against somebody who can’t be killed? We don’t even know how to contain him. If only there was a way to contact the other phoenixes. Would they even help me? Or are they too scared to step forward and make themselves known to the rest of the supernatural world?

I have to find a way out of this stupid room before Parker gets here.

I will end him.

Parker

The closer we get to Henley, the stronger her fear is.

I get the feeling the close proximity isn’t the reason for her increased fear.

I pull at my hair, glancing at the dashboard. “Can’t you drive any faster?”

A hand clamps down on my shoulder. “Parker, Will is driving as fast as he safely can. Your mate is the one who comes back to life when she dies. Wolf shifters don’t have that talent.”

Blaine is right, of course. But that doesn’t mean I want anything happening to Henley. The last time I saw her die, it about killed me. And that was before I found out about the mate bond. Now, I can’t imagine the agony it would be.

“I asked her to marry me.” I sit up straighter, trying to think about something else—anything else.

Will’s eyes widen. “And she said yes?”

“Of course she said yes.” Blaine smacks his arm.

Will rubs his arm. “Don’t hit the driver—that’s dangerous.”

Blaine dramatically rolls his eyes as he looks at me. “Congratulations.”

“She did say yes,” I let them know, just to clarify. “We haven’t told anybody yet. It just happened a few hours ago. Right before…” my voice trails off.

Right before she was taken. Right from my own home.

I knew the spare bedroom my parents tucked her away in was too far from my room. They’re so worried about me breaking their rules when all I care about is protecting her.

I swear, as soon as this nightmare is over, I’m going to marry her. Then nobody will ever have a reason to separate us again. This never would’ve happened if I had been with her.

“Have you told your dad yet?” Will asks.

I shake my head. “No, but it’s not my dad that I’m worried about.”

The car falls silent.

We all know how protective Henley’s dad is of her. He all but threatened me when he found out that Henley and I were mates. But after this, certainly he will see that marrying her is the best way that I can protect her.

Henley’s dad was at work, but he left in the middle of his shift to come with us. He’s riding with my dad, in the car behind us.

I’ve never seen Mr. Stone so terrified before. It was as if his entire world was crumbling before him. I know he loves Henley, but the man is obsessed with his job. I didn’t realize how much he truly loves her. I won’t forget it and I will make sure to always include him in our lives.
