Farris grunted and walked forward. Konrad sniffed the air and veered slightly to the left. Farris followed without question. His nose still wasn’t working right, poor fucker.

They walked and walked. The scent of perfume faded, and Konrad found one place where Dahy must have hopped down on the ground. The leaves there smelled strongly of perfume. “He’s tried to clean off the scent here.” He crouched, grabbed a handful of leaves, and brought them closer to his nose only to groan. Heat washed through him, and his cock strained against the zipper of his jeans. Then he sneezed. Fucking perfume.

Farris gave him a narrow-eyed look. “What was that sound?”

“Huh?” Konrad looked around, had there been a sound?

“The one you made. Sounded an awful lot like a moan.”

“Sneeze, it was a sneeze.”

Farris crossed his arms over his chest and raised an eyebrow in an unimpressed manner. “Before the sneeze.”

Konrad did his best to ignore him. He hadn’t been moaning, had he? But his body sure had reacted to something. “This way.” Dahy had run a few feet on the ground before taking to the trees again. Squirrels weren’t safe on the ground. Konrad was relieved when the scent trail led up into a massive oak.

They walked for a couple of minutes, then Farris stopped. “If we continue in that direction, we’ll be back by the hazel.”

“The hazel?”

“Yeah, there aren’t many hazel trees here, but there is one pretty close to the cabin, and if we continue, we’ll be back there.”

Konrad looked around and tried to get his bearings. Yup, they’d walked in a circle, hadn’t they? Was it an attempt to shake them off his tail? Squirrels were tricky.

“Always knew they were stupid. Can’t go in a straight line through the forest.” Farris shook his head.

“Maybe he’s trying to lose us.”

“I doubt it.”

Konrad grimaced but followed the scent to the hazel and past it toward a stream. “He’s washed here.” Grinning, Konrad looked at Farris.

“Why are you happy? It’s in the middle of the night, and we’re out here chasing a fucking squirrel. It shouldn’t make you happy.”

No, it shouldn’t, but…Konrad breathed in and once again a wave of heat washed over him. Dahy smelled fucking fantastic underneath the perfume. He couldn’t be entirely convinced since the fragrances mixed, but his body was burning for the scent hidden underneath the synthetic one.

After the stream, it was much harder to trace him. They followed the stream but had to back-track several times, and after a while, Farris grew bored.

“He’s gone. Let’s head back to the cabin. I bet it’s breathable now.”

Konrad almost whined. Gone? He couldn’t be gone. Konrad needed to smell him. Needed to be close to him and inhale his true scent. He had to. He stared at Farris. What the fuck was going on? Maybe Farris was right. They should head back, and he should get back home and rest because something wasn’t right.

“Yeah, let’s head back. I’ll inform Myka in the morning, and hopefully she can get hold of him.”

“His things are at my place.”

“Right.” Konrad nodded. “I’ll take them and give them to her. If she can get hold of Dahy, she can hand them back.”

Farris glared at him. “What the fuck is wrong with you, man? We used to hunt squirrels, not worry about returning their things to them.”

Konrad flashed teeth. “I’ve never hunted squirrels.”

“No? What do you call this?”

Konrad snorted. This wasn’t a squirrel hunt, not a real one.

“Fine. Let’s head back.” Farris turned and walked in rapid steps toward the cabin.
