Dahy did. He sucked in a breath and held it for a second or two before releasing it. The heat was scorching inside him. He’d been told there would be heat when a mate bond was formed, but this was burning.

“Okay?”

“Do you feel it too?”

“Yes. It’s the mating.”

“I know, but I didn’t think it’d kill me.”

Konrad laughed softly, pulled him closer and kissed his neck. “It won’t.”

Dahy nodded. It wouldn’t. It had calmed down to a pleasant heat now. He relaxed into Konrad and was rewarded with a kiss on his shoulder. Mated.

Chapter 16

Konrad was pacing the office while Sewell was watching him with an unimpressed look. “Explain again.”

Konrad glared at him. Sewell was good at the touristy stuff, but there was a reason he didn’t include him in too much of the pack business. He always wanted a say in how things were to be done, and it wasn’t how the pack worked.

“Farris was tracking a guy from Ordbury, and right now Roan is watching him, but I need you to take over so Roan can be at Mildred’s in half an hour.”

“Mildred’s?”

Konrad swallowed a growl. “The coffee house where Myka works.”

“The human?”

Deep breath. “Roan’s mate.”

Sewell scrunched his nose. “Why can’t you watch him?”

“I’m gonna go and get Dahy and drive him to Mildred’s so he can meet his cousin there. I’ve told you already.”

Sewell leaned back in his chair. “Yeah, but I’m confused. There is a squirrel in your house, we’re guarding a human, and now there will be two squirrels in one place, and you want me to…what? Watch a guy we know nothing about. Where is Farris anyway?”

Konrad opened his mouth to tell him he was in Ordbury but changed his mind at the last second. “He had to leave town for a few days.”

“Because?”

Konrad shrugged. “Family business, an aunt who needed help with something.”

“But he recognized the guy at the hotel?”

“Yes, from when Roan was in Ordbury.”

Sewell frowned. “Roan was in Ordbury?”

Konrad was vibrating from frustration. “He met Myka in Ordbury and spent a lot of time there. Farris went to see him from time to time.” He hadn’t. Roan and Farris hadn’t hung out before Farris had taken over Roan’s job in Ordbury, but they were the only three who knew.

“Oh, okay. So it’s nothing suspicious.”

“No, he’s most likely here on business. I only want to know where he is and if he leaves.” If Oswald hadn’t been busy guiding a group, he’d have asked him. He wouldn’t have asked stupid questions. Of course, it was suspicious, but he didn’t trust Sewell enough to let him know.

“I need to be at the lake at a quarter to twelve.”

“What?”

“Have some guys come in ice fishing.”
