“Farris. It’s Farris who’s here spying now.”

There was a rustle, and Dahy believed Myka was nodding. “What if they’ve found him out?”

Dahy shook his head. “Nah, not Farris. He’s stealthy.” Dahy had no idea if Farris was stealthy or not, but at least, he wasn’t in the dungeon with them. Maybe they killed spies the moment they were found out.

Roan, Gideon, Jyran, Konrad, and Amir packed themselves into Gideon’s car and headed toward Ordbury. Gideon had tried to make Amir stay behind, but despite not knowing either Dahy or Myka, he’d insisted on coming. Konrad had agreed, which had earned him a glare from Gideon. Amir might be Gideon’s employee, but he was part of Konrad’s pack, and alpha trumped boss.

About halfway there, Jyran changed position where he sat in the middle in the backseat. He was the smallest of them, so it made sense to put him in the middle. “We should’ve taken two cars. There’ll be seven of us on the way back.”

Konrad hadn’t considered the way back. He hoped they’d be seven. Seven meant no one died.

“Squirrels don’t take up much room.” Amir grinned at them. “And we’ll have two. How cool is that? Two squirrels.”

“Don’t start.” Gideon groaned and rubbed his forehead.

“What? You might not understand the magnificence—”

“I’m mated to one, I know they’re magnificent.”

Amir grunted. “I don’t think you do. Jyran, you should be mine instead. I’d treat you right.”

Gideon growled, but Konrad smiled. Amir was trying to distract them, and Konrad appreciated the effort.

When his phone buzzed in his hand, he jumped. He’d called Farris about twenty times without success but now his name flashed on the screen, not as an incoming call but a text.

Eyes and ears everywhere, have turned off the sound. There’s some kind of event behind the arena. Everyone will be there. To start in about forty minutes.

Konrad’s ribcage shrank. “How soon can we reach the arena?”

“Which arena?” Gideon increased the speed and switched lanes.

“There is only one arena in Ordbury.” Jyran leaned forward between the front seats. “It’s easiest to get there if we stay on the highway around Ordbury and turn back in toward the city once we’ve passed it.”

“How long?” Konrad didn’t care which route they took as long as they’d get there in less than forty minutes.

“Twenty-five minutes maybe.” Jyran leaned back and looked at him. “Given there are no disruptions, of course.”

Konrad nodded. “Get us there as fast as you can without getting pulled over for speeding. Farris says he can’t talk because there are eyes and ears everywhere, but there is an event behind the arena in forty minutes. Everyone will be there.”

“Fuck.” Roan leaned his forehead against the window. “How do we sneak in if the entire Ordbury pack is there?”

Konrad didn’t have a clue.

“We shift.” Jyran looked between them. “We park by the gas station near the northern exit, go into the woods and shift, then we run through the woods. It’ll take a little longer, but they won’t see us coming.”

Four wolves and a squirrel would attract a lot of unwanted attention if they were spotted, but Konrad didn’t know Ordbury as well as Jyran and Roan did, so he turned to Roan and waited for him to give his input.

“It’s a risk, but it might be our best option. I’m assuming they all will come there in cars, so they’ll park by the arena. We can’t.”

“Okay, Gideon, you heard them.” Nerves buzzed in Konrad. This could be the last thing he did, but he’d not allow a pack of wolves to tear his mate apart.

Chapter 20

A big burly man with mean eyes crouched in front of Dahy. The light spilling in from the open door allowed him to make out some of his features.

“Rat.”
