He easily ignored the lingering scents of burnt fabric and tinge of chemicals leftover from the fire.

“Stay outside,” he ordered Lucian, Victoria, and Xin, who’d followed behind him in a second vehicle.

While those three stayed outside, protecting his house, Dorian strapped Lena with enough blades to arm a colony of heathens.

“This is a little overkill, don’t you think?” She looked down at her torso. He’d strapped a variety of weapons. “If we’re going after a vampire, don’t we just need a wooden stake?”

Dorian laughed. “It takes more than an impalement to kill one of us. A stake through the heart just slows us down. And the stronger we are, the less impact it has. Besides, we’re going after more than just a vampire, the Savag-Ri are out there too. If they find us, they’ll attack. You need to be prepared for anything.”

She was going on this hunt with him. She was going to have her first taste of their world from Dorian’s side of the battle lines. If they were lucky, they’d find Stryx and be done with him. No one had told Marius what they’d learned, and Dorian planned to keep it that way for now.

Punishment would be delivered accordingly.

He was looking forward to it.

“What are you smiling about?” Her attitude was getting meaner. No doubt due to the fact that her heart was crushed for Dorian’s sake.

He couldn’t go there right now. Of all things to be thinking about, it was, “I’m imagining your first time seeing a Savag-Ri and how you’ll react.”

“Accordingly.” Her sharp tone was razorblades on his skin. “Same for anyone else who threatens to take you from me.”

Be still his doomed, black heart. He cupped her chin. “I love you.”

She pulled away from him. “We need to go.”

Lena was putting walls up now. He let her because doing otherwise made him a hypocrite.

Was it strange that he was looking forward to so much bloodshed? Nope, it was typical. This was Dorian’s life. He spent his whole existence killing. Now he had a partner in crime.

Would she enjoy seeing how he killed Savag-Ri or traitorous vampires? Or would she be repulsed by his methods?

He was about to find out.

“Feed.” It wasn’t a lover’s request. Dorian pierced his neck with the sharp tip of a push dagger before tucking the blade into his harness.

“I can’t,” Lena said, though her eyes latched onto the blood oozing from his wound and her eyes flashed black. “Dorian, I….”

He coaxed her into his arms, angling himself so she could latch on good and proper. She sucked hard and it made his toes curl. “Pull back when you first think it.” He held her to him, ignoring how rock hard his cock was, and held back the groan clawing up his throat.

Lena gripped his shoulders, going up on her toes for a better reach. He winced when she bit down a little too hard. Her aggressiveness was appreciated and adored. He wanted to tear her hunting clothes to shreds with his knives. Bend her over his kitchen counter and fuck her senseless.

But that would have to wait…

Lena pulled back with a tiny grunt. Her fingers dug into his shoulders.

“Lick it closed for me.” He loved being the one to teach her how to be a vampire.

Lena dragged her hot velvet tongue along his neck, and it made his eyes roll in ecstasy. He stayed still while she watched her magic go to work. Their saliva had healing properties in it. That, coupled with their generally speedy healing, made the puncture wound close and disappear in less than three seconds.

“That’s incredible,” she probed his throat gently.

“Are you ready to walk our streets as a predator, Lena?”

She was strapped down with enough blades to look like a wet dream.

“What was I before today?”

Dorian nipped her bottom lip, “Prey. You were our prey.”
