Olson frowned. “You’re never a burden, Rex. You’re going to be a great dad because you care. It’s okay if words are hard for you.”

Rex squeezed Olson’s hand. Olson was the brightest spark in his life. “You amazing.”

Olson cracked a smile, leaning in to nuzzle him. “There are things a lot more important than how well you speak. You’re strong. You’ve survived crap that other people won’t even believe is real. Their opinions shouldn’t matter.”

Olson rubbed his thumb over the scars on the back of Rex’s hand, his gaze turning faraway. “Nothing can be worse than losing you, you know. So yeah, I know you have nightmares sometimes. I know you’re still learning and getting your feet under yourself. We’ll deal with rude people just like we’re dealing with life, okay? You and me, we’ll make this work. We’ll raise our baby and he or she or they will think you’re the best alpha dad ever.”

Olson smiled, all warm and sweet, and Rex had to kiss him.

Olson kissed back, rubbing his thumb over the matching ring on Rex’s finger. Rex grinned when he saw it, every single time.

“Love,” Rex whispered against his lips.

“Love,” Olson whispered back.

“Olson,” the nurse called.

Both of them jumped. Then Olson smiled and tugged Rex to his feet, and Rex crowded close to his omega as they entered the doctor’s office.

Dr. Smith was a beta with a grassy scent and a warm smile. She shook both their hands, glancing curiously at Rex. “Welcome to the clinic. What can I do for you today?”

Olson exchanged a look with Rex; Rex nodded to indicate he was okay with her talking speed.

“We’re here for the twenty-week ultrasound,” Olson said. “And whatever other tests I might need.”

Rex let them talk. There were a lot of medical words that would get overwhelming if he tried to understand it all, so he didn’t. He’d wait for Olson to tell him if there was something he needed to know.

The doctor asked Olson a lot of questions. Then she had Olson climb onto the exam table, and Rex winced.

At least the table was cushioned and there was a pillow. Olson seemed relaxed; Rex made himself swallow the anxiety in his gut.

Normal people went to doctors, Olson had told him. Most doctor visits didn’t hurt.

Dr. Smith had Olson pull his shirt up and his pants down a little, squirting some gel onto Olson’s belly. Then she pressed a stubby thing against Olson’s skin, looking at a mess of black and white dots on the computer screen.

After several taps on her keyboard, she made a soft sound of surprise. “Ah.”

Olson looked up curiously. “What is it?”

Dr. Smith looked Olson in the eye, then Rex. “This is your baby, right here,” she said. “See the arms and legs?”

Rex looked. That was their baby. Their baby. His heart swelled.

But... There were too many arms and legs.

He glanced at Olson, whose mouth had fallen open. They exchanged a look.

“Two?” Rex asked.

“Sure seems like it,” Dr. Smith answered with a smile. “And they both seem to be developing well. Congratulations.”

Rex’s instincts rumbled with delight. Olson wanted a baby. Two would make him twice as happy, right?

“Twins,” Olson whispered disbelievingly.

“Told you,” Rex said, nudging Olson’s calf. “Breed Olson. Give baby. Give again.”

Olson flushed a deep red. The doctor laughed, but it didn’t sound mocking.
