“What this is, is none of your business,” Jesse bit out and grabbed his gun. “Let’s roll.”
They headed out into the darkness. They got halfway down the steps and Dante started in.
“So, you guys tag-teamed the virgin? How’d you manage that?”
“Shut it,” Jesse growled.
“What he said,” Xander snapped.
“Never known you guys to fuck and not tell,” Dante chuckled as they walked along the gravel road to the bunker. “Don’t tell me you actually like?—”
“Stop,” Xander urged. “Just stop.”
Dante said no more, but despite the silence, the air was thick with tension. Xander was now aware of Jesse in a way that he couldn’t ignore. In a way that, Xander finally admitted, he’d been wanting for a long time. All that bickering and flirting had to end up somewhere. He just didn’t realize it would be here, with Jesse and Val. The three of them together were, fuck, Xander was at a loss for how to describe the incredible high he was still riding.
Focus. There are more important things than your cock.
“Sonny, Jackson, and the rest of the crew are waiting at the tunnel exit. Wyatt is monitoring security. Gage, Vanier, and Avery are in the bunker.”
“Avery? What the hell is she doing there in her condition?”
Dante shrugged his shoulders. “She’s stubborn as fuck, no surprises there.”
They continued walking, the cool air helping to calm Xander’s body and his wayward thoughts.
Just as they were about to step into the bunker, the dogs began to whine and shake. And that was fucking unusual. Then a loud boom had the ground underneath them shaking, like an earthquake. A few seconds later, Gage and Avery appeared at the doorway.
“What the fuck was that?” Jesse asked.
Their phones started buzzing like crazy.
“The firefight is on,” Gage announced as he tapped his phone. “Sonny set off a series of explosives near the exit. Maximum damage in minimal time.”
“That was bigger than expected. No wonder the dogs went nuts,” Jesse added, as he gave his beasts a reassuring pat and command to stay.
“Let’s roll and see what we’re dealing with,” Gage demanded. “Jesse, you stay here with Avery.”
“No!” both siblings shouted at the same time.
“That’s a direct order,” Gage bit out. “Anything happens to me out there, you two are in charge of the club, right? That’s the plan.”
“No,” Jesse replied, shaking his head. “I’m not sitting here. I’m going with.”
“You were given an order, Jess,” Xander snapped. “Can’t you listen for once?”
“You’re one to talk!” Jesse shouted, getting up in Xander’s face. “And I’m not standing here waiting around for someone else to do my job. I’m going in with you, that’s final!”
CHAPTER 17
XANDER
“Think of the club, think of Val,” Xander hissed.
For some weird reason, Xander didn’t want Jesse on the front line of this battle. Not now. There was too much at stake. If something happened to him. No, Xander refused to go there. And what about Val? What if they’d gotten her pregnant? Jesus Christ, that’s why Xander didn’t do complicated. It fucked with your ability to do the job.
Jesse shook his head and Xander knew by the stubborn look in those brown eyes that there was no changing a Hellion’s mind. Jesse was going in with them.
“Fine,” Gage stated. “Vanier, you stay with Avery. And leave the dogs here. And Avery, don’t even think of arguing. This is not up for discussion.”
