“Don’t you dare bring that up right now, Laken!” I shout, laughing. “You wanna spout off about our favorite fantasy while we can’t touch you? No. Fuck you.”

She laughs. “Come on! We can at least talk about the specifics.”

“Nope.” Kade backs into the counter when she walks around the island. “Back off, Bossy. I’m trying to prove I’m not a slave to my dick.”

“Or a caveman,” I add. “Just drop it for now, love.”

She rolls her eyes at both of us, and yeah, she has every right to. I got used to a certain level of sex, and now that I haven’t been able to be with her since she fell in the bathroom, it’s…yeah, I’m adjusting!

“Talk more about the wildlife shit,” Kade says, loading the dishwasher. “Or how we’re gonna kill Gar’s girlfriend. Or anything else.”

She laughs, and then she sits down at the island to shout orders at us as we clean, talking about her new ideas for business and life.

Chapter 43

Two sets of emerald green eyes glare at me from across the island. I’m doing everything in my power to stand up to those glares, but these assholes mean business. The sun is barely up, but they wanted to start the morning with a confrontation, so have at it, boys. We’re going to war.

“I don’t like it, Laken.” Jed shakes his head.

“He’s my best friend,” I counter. “He isn’t going to do anything.”

“It’s not him we’re worried about. It’s his cunty girlfriend.” Kade crosses his arms.

Joined forces are hard to beat, but I won’t buckle on this one. “Gar said she’s at work. I’m going to visit him because he deserves an apology for what you two did to him.”

“Fine. Then we’re coming with you as buffers in case she decides to pop in unannounced, which we all know she will.” Jed looks at Kade, and they agree on that.

“We don’t even know it was her. We have no proof yet!”

“Don’t play dumb, Bossy. It was her.”

“Yeah? Then why’d you hit Gar?”

“Because we’re assholes,” Kade says. “Doesn’t change the fact that she’s crazy and will find a way to fuck up your day with Gar. We just don’t want either of you getting caught in something you aren’t ready for.”

Which was pathetic. I’d never had trouble being around Gar before, but ever since he started dating Amber, things have been different. He noticed at first, but I think he’s…I hate to say it, but I think he’s a bit brainwashed by her. I hate to say this, too, but Gar has always struggled in the dating department. He’s such a catch, but I don’t think he’s really clear on what he wants or who he’s interested in, and because of that, he’s settling for the first person who gave him all her attention. I can’t fault him for that, but I need to make sure she doesn’t take advantage of him or do something like this to me again.

“Gar’s your best friend, we get it, but he’s all caught up in that chick because she’s giving him everything he wants right now. He’s blind, and that’s going to hurt you.” Jed tries for a soft smile, but I’m too riled up to appreciate it.

“He’s not fucking stupid!” I shout.

“He’s stupid right now,” Kade counters. “All caught up in that pussy, and he’s going to defend her if you try to say anything about her.”

As much as I want to confront him about Amber, I just want to see him and make sure he’s okay. I get the worry. I understand where they’re coming from. They aren’t telling me to stay away from Gar; they’re telling me to be careful around Amber and to expect pushback from Gar. Maybe they’re right. If I want to see him, I should do it somewhere public, or at the Dare house to make sure Amber can’t accuse us of anything. Which is so pathetic because we’ve never had to worry about that before.

“Fine. Then I’ll see him somewhere else other than his place. He’s still my best friend, and you two fucked him up. So I’m going to apologize because that’s what you fucking do! You fess up to your mistakes.”

“Not happening, Laken. Not today. You can wait until tonight and we’ll go with you.”

“Fuck you both! He’s your friend, too, and you’re just going to let him feel like shit about this?” I throw my arms in the air. “I’m seeing him today.”

Defiance. I should have known it’d get Kade going. He has a sick sort of smirk on his face, completely satisfied by this situation. He’s pleased that I’m fighting back, which only makes me want to fight him more. Then he ruins it all by jangling keys in front of my face. “Good luck going, Bossy. I have the keys to both trucks.”

Asshole. Time to switch tactics. “Kade,” I start, swishing the hips a bit as I saunter up to him. “If you give me a ride into town, I’ll—”

“You really think that shit is going to work?” Jed laughs.

“It’s sort of working,” Kade admits, licking his lips.
