“Because there’s no reason to!” I insisted, my words laced with annoyance. Some things were best left buried in the past.

“I think you let it get in the way,” she whispered, before licking her lips. What the fuck was she doing?

“Get in the way of what, Ev? It’s in the past. Leave it there.”

“I think you let it get in the way of this,” she said, reaching down and grabbing my cock. I yelped and jumped away from her.

“Ev!” I cried out. She laughed, coming close again. God, she was so close.

I wanted her so fucking badly. In fact, at that moment, there was nothing I wanted more than to push everything off my desk and lay her back on it and give her everything I’d been holding back for the last decade. She wanted it, too. Clearly.

“We can’t do this, and you know that.” I finally said. Each word was like a dagger to my heart.

“I know you want me.”

“I’m not arguing.”

“I dare you to kiss me.”

“We’re not kids anymore,” I protested.

“That’s exactly my point.”

“West would kill us and you know it.”

“Fuck West,” she said, her plump lips pursing into a pout. I wanted to suck on her bottom lip until she cried out, but no. Never. The thought ripped through me like a bullet.

“Don’t be stupid, Ev,” I insisted.

She rushed me. Her lips fell on mine in a flash, all hot and quick and fluttery and unexpected. I took a step back and she kept her lips against mine. When her tongue darted out and seared my bottom lip, I knew I was fucked. I groaned, grabbed her head with both hands and kissed her hard and hot. My tongue dove into her mouth until I found hers, tangling with it, hungrily, urgently.

Her moans were like music to my ears. When she arched her back and pressed her tits against my chest, it was like a light turned on in my head.

What the actual fuck was I doing shoving my tongue in her mouth?

I pushed her away, anguish pouring into my veins.

“We can’t!” I shouted. “What the fuck, Everleigh?”

She watched me intently, her lips wet and swollen, her eyes brimming with tears.

We stood staring at each other across the room, like deer frozen in the headlights of our shared fate, breathless and surprised.

“Don’t act like you didn’t enjoy that,” she whispered.

I was about to reply, to tell her how preposterous this whole thing was, when a knock sounded at my door. I pulled open the door to reveal West, holding a bunch of papers in his hands.

“Hey, I wanted to give you all this info on potential investors for you to –.”

He stopped short when he saw his sister.

“Is she fucking bugging you again?”

“She was just leaving,” I said, avoiding her eyes. I couldn’t bear to look at her, to see the pain I’d surely inflicted with my carelessness.

“Yeah, I just stopped by to say hello.” I heard the disappointment in her voice and it broke my heart. I’d done that. I’d hurt the one person I actually fucking cared about.

“I told you the other day that Theo is too busy for your bullshit, Ev,” West snapped.
