In what twisted universe did Seth get to walk away squeaky clean?

Oh, yes. This one.

“Dammit!” I bit out.

No. Screw him. He didn’t get to have more of my headspace. At least for the time being.

“So, me, the ring, and the king?” I said.

“Sounds like the title of a romance novel.”

“Dunno where to start with that.”

“Could he…” I hated saying this. “Could he be the threat?”

He stiffened a little. “Let’s hope not. It’s the weakest possibility, but still on the list. Keep it to yourself. It doesn’t leave this room.”

Icky dread invaded my chest, this Asher-made bubble burst.

I’d been waiting for the pop.

Asher glugged his second cup of tea. “I’ve got to call Carissa when you’re ready. Grab a shower first. Freshen up. There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom cabinet, towels, plenty of shower gel. I’ll ask for some clothes to be sent up to tide you over.”

My hands shook, anxious over the ring. “Okay.”

He took my hands, tracing his thumb across my knuckles. “It’ll be alright.”

“Hope so.”

“Hot water will help.”

I nodded.

He cupped my chin, lifting my head. This tempting proximity rebuilt the bubble around us.

Silence. Nothing awkward, but dreamy. His hand moved to my shoulder, slowly sliding down my arm.

“Everything will be alright.” He spoke in honeyed tones, every syllable dripping with sexual promise. That deep, knee-weakening baritone held the power to spread my legs.

And I want you to.

Now.

I tilted my head, never taking my eyes off his.

“Luke…” he said.

This was all so easy, like slipping on the perfect sized glove. Nothing else mattered. Time could jump down a well. It meant nothing. We were meant to be in this room, staring, bemused by our new connection.

Safe…

I blinked, tearing my gaze away. “I should clean up.”

Asher took a step back. “Enjoy the shower.”

Was that disappointment in his voice?

Did he want to come with me?
