“Tens.” She snorted, but she placed one knee beside him then the other, straddling him. Her hair tossed back as she leaned forward to nibble on his neck. When she pulled back, she stared down at him. “One night isn’t too long, I suppose.”

His cock had softened during his convincing, but now it started to harden again. “Whatever you want,” he promised.

Her eyes twinkled. “Right now, I actually want to go clean up.” After a long, deep kiss, she pried herself away and entered his bathroom.

Man, oh man, he had not expected her to give in. She knew how to surprise him, that was for sure, and he so appreciated that. The women before her, most of them had only lasted a short while with him. He’d always felt like he was looking for his place in this world, like he was missing something he didn’t even know where to begin to search for it. Not to say he thought here was where he wanted to grow roots. Arizona just wasn’t home. And not to say he thought that what was missing was a woman.

But a she-wolf…

No. How could he even contemplate that?

She emerged from the bathroom. A few water drops clung to her body, and his mouth watered. Damn, she was fine.

Slowly, hips swaying, she approached him. “Lie down on your stomach,” she demanded.

His arms curled around her waist, yanking her to him. In one swift move, he had her flat on her back on the bed. “I rather like you beneath me.”

Her fists hit his chest. “But I want—”

“To be on top?” He rolled them over, so she stared down at him. “Happy now?”

But her eyes were amber again. Her fingers turned into claws on his shoulders, and almost before he knew what she was doing, she had him flipped onto his back, her legs straddling him.

Claws dug beneath his right shoulder blade.

“How dare you!”

Shit.

He forced himself onto all fours and flung her off his back. She landed on her feet, and he turned around quick enough to be able to block her few blows.

“How could you.” Her face was nearly unrecognizable, twisted so with fury and raw anger. “Did you know who I was all along?”

“Yes, Misti Wolventon.”

Trembling with rage, she slashed at him, her lips contorting as her teeth changed into fangs.

“I don’t want to hurt you,” he said even though he knew she was beyond reasoning.

“Too late for that.” Quicker than a wolf should be able to move, she grabbed her clothes, dressed in lightning speed, and hurried out the door.

Feeling oddly bereft, Anders stomped over to the door and slammed it shut. He locked it and deadbolted it before entering his bathroom. By using a hand mirror, he turned to be able to see what she had seen.

The burned marks, long ago faded, that revealed him to be a member of the Shadowed Stars pack. A curved line of stars, the topmost the largest, the bottommost the smallest.

Two rival packs. What had he been thinking to bed her like that? But he had to have her. Even if only for one night.

Well, he had had her, and only the once. The question was: was she out of his system, or had the marks she left on his body meant she’d wormed her way in under his skin?

Only time would tell.

The sight of those five stars had ruined everything. Everything. How could she have been so blinded as to give her body over willingly to a strange wolf? And not a strange wolf after all, but a wolf who turned out to be part of the pack her family had hated and fought for a century.

Racing through the night, Misti hurried toward her father’s place. Red Nightwalkers. They were all the wolves she ever needed.

Still, her body ached in places she wanted to blush over. Every stride tightened her core, and she could still feel where his kisses and hands had touched her body, as if he had left invisible brands on her. Well, not all were invisible. In his bathroom mirror, she’d spied several dark hickeys. Passion marks, lover’s bites. Her hand went to her neck, rubbing it.
