“Well, they sound beautiful, like you.”

We talk more about growing up, I tell her about growing up in Southern California, but I love living in Minnesota. I explained how going to different sports games was a highlight since there are so many different teams in California. The smile on her face is the highlight of my day.

“Thank you, Rocky, today has been wonderful. I’ve never been on a date like this. No one has ever put in the effort,” she says with a small smile.

“The date isn’t over. I still have a few more activities planned.”

“Ooh really? Like what?”

“How do you feel about paddle boarding?”

“Let’s do it.”

The rest of the afternoon is awesome. We paddle board and then I take her to see the Anchor USS Saint Paul Memorial. She hasn’t been here in forever, so it’s nice to make these memories with her. Effort. Damn, all she’s wanted is effort. Well, Montana, that’s what you will get from now on. To be made a priority. That’s all any woman want and it’s not hard to do.

If he wanted to, he would. It’s what my mom and dad tell my sister. She won't settle for less than someone amazing, and I know Montana won't either. Pretty promises are things little boys say wrapped up in a little bow to make you swoon. A man keeps his word.

Football practice in the summer is rough. Ever since I was old enough to throw a ball, it was my thing. I tried hockey, but it wasn’t for me, and thankfully my dad, Christopher Savage, two-time MVP was supportive of whatever sport I wanted to play. He always wanted me to play hockey, and even though I don’t, he still supports me in my sport. He comes to every one of my games when he is in town.

My dad was born and raised here, and his father played hockey for the Minnesota Wild as well. I really wanted to love hockey and make them both proud by following in their footsteps, but I love playing football.

Today, thankfully, we’re watching game day tapes from last season. Everyone has their assignments from the coaches, and we go and watch the tapes. Talon coming here is a game changer for us. He transferred from his last school—he didn’t really open up as to why, but I have a feeling it has something to do with Montana.

“Yo, Loyal, glad you transferred here, adding you on defense is a game changer. Also, is your cousin single? She's fine as fuck,” Kellen asks, I clench my jaw and want to beat the shit out of him for even bringing her up.

“Nah, she’s not,” Talon says, and looks at me and grins.

I nod my chin at him in thanks.

“Are you done gossiping, or can we get back to the tapes?”

“Yes, Cap,” Kellen says.

Afternoon practice is brutal. Coach McKenzie is a great coach who wants us to be great men first, and amazing football players second. He's all about family and is another person to show us life is not all about football. Him and his wife are high school sweethearts. We keep telling him that’s rare these days. He says, “That’s because all most guys see is a pretty face and that’s it. No one gets to know each other these days.”

With that, I realize I want to get to know Montana better. My obsession with her has taken root. This girl is my end game.

With football practice, I’ve been so busy. It’s been a few days since I have seen Montana. So, tonight I’m going to her place for a movie night, and we are going to cook together too. Making some authentic Puerto Rican dishes; arroz con pollo, maduros and empanadas.

I head to the store and grab everything we need. Before checking out, I text Montana to see if she needs anything before, I get there.

Me: Hey Killer, I’m at the store grabbing what we need for dinner, do you want anything?

Killer: Chocolate chip cookie dough please?

Killer: Oh and flamin hot Funyuns!

Me: You got it baby.

Killer: Thanks Savage.

As I knock on her door, the nerves start to settle in. I haven’t ever cooked with anyone other than my mom and Autumn.

Montana is definitely a homebody, and I’m not mad about it. The other girls I’ve dated always wanted to go out to parties or to have fancy dinners. They want to be seen with the star quarterback of our college. They never tried to get to know me beyond the surface of being on my arm and landing an NFL top draft pick. It’s nice to meet someone who wants to know more about me than just being with me for my name.
