Responding wordlessly, she scrambled into place beside him before flinging herself across his thighs.

He chuckled as she tried to settle, one of his giant palms grazing her partially-exposed backside. “Comfortable?” His tone was sardonic.

“Yes, sir.”

“Wrong answer,” he chastised, landing a hard smack on her upturned ass.

The noise of the impact reverberated seconds before her brain registered the sting. Fuck! It hurt. More than she remembered. Would she be able to take the spanking, after all?

“This isn’t about your comfort.” Sebastian’s words echoed around the room, accelerating her heart rate. “It’s about tanning this incredible behind.”

“Yes, sir.” He was right but hearing him say it out loud was sexier than she’d imagined.

“Wandering out at night on your own is a bad idea, little girl.” His palm pressed into her right cheek, squeezing it roughly. “There are bad men out there.”

“Like you, sir?”

Shit, had she just said that aloud?

His hand disappeared, connecting with her ass seconds later and giving her an answer. Yes, she had, and yes it hurt like hell.

“Yes, like me,” he growled.

She tensed at the resonance, as if his voice had silently commanded it.

“You know nothing about me, Rebecca.” Massaging her cheeks harshly, he went on. “Yet here you are sprawled over me.”

Oh, God, he’s right.

“Does that sound sensible?”

What was that supposed to mean? Was Sebastian inferring that she shouldn’t trust him?

“No…” she panted. “I don’t know, sir.”

“You don’t know?” Catching the underside of her cheek, he smacked her again, this time drawing a gasp from her lips.

“No, sir.” What had she gotten herself into? Fidgeting over his lap, she tried to rise a few inches, but was pushed unceremoniously down by his free hand.

“Now, where do you think you’re going?” Sebastian sounded amused, the question lingering as Rebecca struggled to make sense of what was going on. Her emotions were in free fall. She wanted this, but she didn’t. She had faith in him, but she didn’t. She hadn’t anticipated it being so contradictory.

“I…” Brow creasing, she realized that she was close to tears. Shit, this was supposed to be fun, not an emotional ordeal.

“You’re not going anywhere.” Answering his own question, Sebastian lifted his palm and spanked her, a fast succession of swats that took her breath away. Heaving in air, she crumpled, folding over him until she was sprawled over the sofa.

He was too strong, too insistent. Rebecca wasn’t going anywhere.

“You’re here not only because your evening walk was reckless and put you in danger, but because you begged me so fucking nicely.”

She had done that. The recollection of her performance swelled in her head, reinforcing his point.

“Didn’t you?” Striking both of her cheeks, his demand rung out around the room.

“Yes, sir.” Squeezing her eyes closed, she refused to acknowledge the pain, nor the brimming tears. She focused on her breathing and on the sound of the crackling flames devouring the wood.

“So, that means you stay unless you use your safe word.” Sebastian paused, skimming his hand over her sore skin. “Do you have something you need to tell me, little girl?”

Tell him? If he was asking if she intended to use her safe word, then the answer was no. She’d never give in that easily.
