His heart beat faster as he neared, and peering into the vehicle, he wondered if the driver was one of the many women he’d taken to his bed over the last few years. Maybe that was why he’d recognized her voice.

Nothing, though, prepared him for the face he saw, her huge brown eyes widening as their gazes locked and his brain registered her beauty. There, driving the solitary mountain road was the woman he hadn’t been able to get out of his head; his therapist, Eden Lewis.

Chapter Eight

Eden

––––––––

“FANCY MEETING YOU OUT here?”

Her tone was sardonic as she studied his stunned expression. Why was Cole Vaughn out there, and what had happened to his shirt? Her gaze lingered over his honed torso longer than it should have done until she noticed the clothing in his hand.

“I was just thinking the same.” He smiled as he stooped to see her. “Are you okay?” Cole glanced around. “You’re headed into the middle of nowhere.”

“Of course.”

Her reply was a little too defensive for her liking, but what was she supposed to say?

No, I decided to go for a drive to avoid the ghost of my father.

Cole would be understandably bewildered by that level of honesty. She, after all, was supposed to be his therapist. He didn’t need to know she was being haunted, and he certainly didn’t need to know how close she was to lunacy.

“What about you?” she probed. “Just out for a little stroll in the moonlight?” Without your shirt? She held the final few words back, but couldn’t resist the way her eyes raked over his washboard abs for a second time.

Damn, Cole has a great body.

She forced her gaze to the skyline to see whether the moon she’d mentioned was actually visible. She was relieved to find its ethereal glow sat on top of the mountains.

“Something like that.” His smirk suggested her gaze had definitely dawdled on his naked body for a little longer than was right, but what the hell was she supposed to do? Who walked around so late half-naked? Was he in some sort of trouble?

As if to answer her unspoken question, Cole continued.

“I was actually on my way home.”

“Home?” Where does this guy live? Without her notes it was impossible to say, but Eden knew residences were few and far between in the direction she’d chosen. That was why she’d selected it in the first place. “Your house must be incredibly isolated.”
