“About once a year.”
“So, shadow fae only have sex once a year?”
“Yes, if they’re married or bonded mates and are trying to procreate.”
“And if they’re not trying?”
“If the couple has been together for a while before the start of the woman’s fertile period, they may fall into a mating fever, which usually spans about three days.”
“So, you can only have sex once a year during those three days. And if you’re not married or mated or whatever, you don’t have sex at all?”
He winced. “Who’d want to have sex for no reason? It’s messy, often inconvenient, and always driven by instinct. It’s nothing but a painful urge that needs to be taken care of or it’d drive the person insane. It’s best to avoid it unless absolutely necessary.”
“Like for procreation?”
“Exactly.”
“Well… It is a bit different for humans.”
“I’ve heard.” He brushed a strand of my hair away from my forehead and placed it behind my ear. “Is that what just happened? Was the pleasure we felt tonight of a sexual nature?”
By now, I should probably stop blushing around him. Only my cheeks flared hot once again.
“Yes, Rha. Welcome to your first orgasm.”
He hadn’t come himself. He didn’t even have the body part necessary for that. But he’d experienced my orgasm as his own. It was bizarre and felt more intimate than anything I’d ever done with a man before.
Rha stroked my cheek.
“What’s this?” He rubbed a spot just above my lip on the right where I had a small birthmark. “It doesn’t come off.”
“And it won’t.” I rolled my eyes. “It’s a birthmark. I was born with it.”
“Just on one side?”
“Yes, Rha. Just on one side, specifically to offend your symmetry-loving sensibilities.”
He sighed. “You’re such a chaotic mess, Dawn, inside and out.”
That could be taken as an insult if it wasn’t said in a reverent voice with a warm smile.
“Speaking of a mess.” I gestured at the shoved aside table with the dishes strewn on the floor. “Who’s going to clean this one?”
He paid no attention to the state of the room, keeping his gaze on me.
“I’m afraid no one can restore the order or clean the mess you’ve caused, Dawn, both in my dwelling and in my heart.”
Chapter Sixteen
RHA
She was a splendid mess. A chaotic whirlwind of contradicting emotions. Her affection for me flickered like a candle flame in the breeze of doubts. But in those rare moments when it burned strongly, it was spectacular. And also spectacularly addictive.
All I wanted was to keep kissing her while I hunted for that spot between her legs that she’d touched before falling undone with the most intense, magical pleasure I’d ever tasted.
The doors flew suddenly open, however. Princess Alzali, my meddlesome cousin, slipped into the room uninvited. She’d arrived that evening with an order from the queen. I hadn’t seen my mother for over eight years, and instead of coming to Teneris with a visit or inviting me to Kalmena, she’d sent Alzali.
“Your Highness.” My cousin sank into a slow bow, visibly perfectly respectful. Never mind that she’d just disobeyed my order not to enter my private dining room while I was here with Dawn.
