Pop wrapped his hand around my bicep, and both men walked us toward the building.
“Head down,” Pop muttered without really moving his mouth. “Can’t read your expression if they can’t see it.”
He had a point, and both Bear and I lowered our heads slowly. It also showed our submission, which was exactly what we needed to portray to get in that building still breathing.
“See you on the other side, brothers, wherever the fuck that may be.” Ritz muttered, and I closed my eyes briefly. We had no idea how this was going to end and who of us wouldn’t be going home, at least not the way we came.
Pop yanked open the clubhouse door and shoved me in ahead of him, yanking my body to a stop in the middle of the room. I kept my head down but felt Bear shoved in beside me.
“Well, well, old man, you weren’t lying.” A shiver ran down my spine when my father’s voice echoed through the almost empty room. “Part of me still believed you might be.”
“You must’ve had me confused with those lowlifes you been in business with.” Pop said, and I swore under my breath. Pop really liked to push the fucking envelope with my father.
“Those lowlifes have made me and this club very wealthy and powerful.”
“Guess I’ll have to see that for myself.” Pop answered.
“Look at me boy.” My father spoke.
I lifted my head and met his stare. His lips were curved in a cocky grin, and I choked down all the shit I wanted to say. I’d have to keep it to myself.
For now.
“You too, Bear.”
I watched out of the corner of my eye as Bear slowly lifted his head before my father continued speaking. “Gotta say, boys, I’m a little surprised you were so easily taken. Always knew my boy was the brains, and Bear, you were the strength. Fuck, if I didn’t hate you so much, I’d almost say I was proud to see you two team up. That was exactly what I’d hoped you’d do for the Widows. Kind of a shame to lose so much potential, but you can’t be trusted.”
He stepped closer until he stood right in front of me and put his face close. I swallowed hard at the familiar stench of cigarette smoke and liquor when he began speaking. “The original brothers, the few who knew what you did and what I allowed because of it, are waiting for their chance with you. They’ve been waiting a long time. It’ll be a nice to finally give them what they’ve been waiting for.”
“I’m surprised you told them I was the one in control.”
His face twisted with hate. “You never controlled one damn thing, boy. I’ve known every step you’ve taken since I threw your sorry ass out.”
“Then you know about the Diablos.” I felt Bear tense beside me, but he didn’t so much as twitch.
His eyes narrowed, and I knew I had him, so I smirked. “Guess you don’t know everything.” I shrugged and pretended to wince like my arm still hurt, knowing he bought it when he returned my smirk. I still needed to sell our story, at least for a few more minutes, and since it had been about two weeks since the pictures were sent, the bruises would be fading, but my fucked-up arm would still be, well, fucked-up. “You tell your cronies about this meeting?”
“Nah, no need to involve them in this. I knew it would be easy. Fuck, I could probably handle both of you myself from the shape you’re in, but I brought a few anyway. Don’t like blood on my cut.” His eyes bore into mine. “You were never going to beat me, boy. Now, where’s the video?”
I wanted to tell him to fuck himself, but I knew better. We had a plan, and I needed to follow it, so I jerked my head toward Pop.
He stepped back, looked at Pop, and held out his hand. Pop stepped forward and handed the small drive to him. He stared at it only for a minute before shoving it into the pocket of his jeans. “Do have to say, I admire your dedication of the right way to run clubs, old man, but even your acts lately don’t make up for agreeing to stay on with this new pussy club, so we’re gonna have to reject your membership.” He chuckled. “As a matter of fact, we reject your whole club, so after we’re done here, we’ll take a little trip to your clubhouse and take care of the rest.” He gestured behind him and smiled in my direction. “And Snake can reclaim his property.”
Snake moved to stand in front of me, and I was surprised when my father stepped away and crossed his arms over his chest, but it seemed like he was going to let Snake have a turn. I braced for what I was going to hear, reminding myself to stay calm and not react.
He grinned. “She’s a good lay, isn’t she? Worth all the fucking work I put into her. It’s a shame she turned.” I narrowed my eyes, but he continued. “Knew she was feeding you information, just never knew how much. The Diablos”—he whistled—“I’m impressed. Never thought you had it in you, especially since you never played hero and rescued our little whore.”
My head jerked back, and my voice dropped. “What?”
He chuckled. “I knew you wanted her, saw you watching her a couple of times. Figured you’d eventually try to play hero, but the fucking cop beat you every time. He’s a pain in the ass. Tried taking him out a few times; the next time, I’ll make damn sure I don’t miss.”
He reached behind him and pulled a gun from the waistband of his jeans, holding it up between us, his eyes running over it like he was inspecting it for something. Then his lips tipped up in an evil grin. “This is the gun I used to shoot the fucking cop. Seems only fitting I use the same one to shoot you too, don’t you think? Since you’re both fucking my whore.”
“Snake,” my father barked out. “Enough. You’ll get your chance when we get back.”
Snake smiled at me while he answered my father. “That’s not gonna work for me, Viper.”
He turned his body quickly, lifted his gun, and shot my father in the knee, causing him to drop immediately, and scream.
