“I wanted to apologize for being a dick yesterday.”
“No apology necessary. I understand what a terrible subject it is for you. And you weren’t completely off base. I am looking for a story. I have to go on the air Wednesday with something new or they’re going to cancel my segment.”
“The new murder isn’t enough to report on?” Damn, he was hoping to get a lot more information out of her.
“I can’t make the tie to Sarah’s case yet. It’s all just speculation.”
Shit. Maybe he could. Or Ryder could, if he could get that information from Ashley. “I’d like to see you,” he said. “Where are you right now?”
“Manhattan. But like I said, I’m packing.”
“What are you doing tomorrow?”
“I’ve got an interview planned.”
“Where?”
“Ronkonkoma.”
Sentinel knew that wasn’t a coincidence. “You’re interviewing Stan?” he barked.
“He called me,” she said defensively.
“You can’t go there alone.”
“I’m going to have a camera crew with me. And he was cleared of your sister’s murder.”
“Then where has he been for the last two years?” Sentinel asked, challenging her.
“That’s going to be one of my questions.”
“When are you meeting him?”
“That’s none of your business. And I’m warning you, if you show up and start trouble, I will film it and put it on the eleven o’clock news.”
“I never start trouble, baby. I finish it.”
“I mean it. If you try to intimidate him, he’ll run scared again. Is that what you want?”
“I don’t care if Stan Stevens disappears off the face of the planet.” And chances were he would do just that, especially if Sentinel didn’t get answers in two days. Ryder would sink Stan’s ass so far out in Long Island Sound, they’d never find a body. It wasn’t a bad plan, unless you considered she didn’t have a boat.
“Well, I do,” Ashley said. “He’s got information I need.”
And information that Sentinel needed too. Stan wouldn’t talk to him, so maybe it was a good thing that Ashley was doing some of the legwork for him.
“I’ll stay away,” he said, “but I want to see you after the interview.”
“After the interview, I have to go back to the studio and edit it. I can see you Thursday.”
“Wednesday night after the interview. I’ll come into the studio with you.”
She hesitated. “Can I interview you too?”
Sentinel thought about it. “Why not?” he said. “But I want everything you know about Stan and these new murders.”
“Deal.”
“And Ashley?” he added before she could hang up.
“Yeah?”
“When you interview me, don’t wear any underwear.”
He hung up on her shocked gasp.
