“I am alone, but this is my home and I want to be back before sunset.”

Iron thought for a moment, his eyes taking on a slightly brighter red glow. Finally, he nodded. “Very well. If you wish to leave this evening, I will have you escorted back to this cave.”

Her eyes narrowed in suspicion. There was something he wasn’t saying. She believed that he would let her return, but there was more to it.

“I want to come back alone, Iron. I won’t let anyone follow me.”

“You cannot be out here alone, Amy. It is too dangerous.”

“The only dangerous thing out here is me!” she snapped back, fear engulfing her at the thought of all those huge alien cyborg warriors converging on her tiny home and finding the others.

Iron tilted his head to the side, studying her for a long moment. “You are very brave for such a small female.”

“Bravery becomes confidence when you know you can back it up.”

A deep, low chuckle escaped Iron. His eyes shimmered with amusement as he took in her tiny frame, her skinny arms and legs and her foot and a half smaller height.

“I do not doubt your ability to defend yourself, Amy. But there are creatures out here far more dangerous. Ones that not even I would want to face alone.”

“What creatures?”

“I can scent a desert night beast. I believe this may have been a lair to one a while ago. Even though it's abandoned, the beast may return. Trust me, female, it is not something you want to face out here alone. We will keep you safe in the compound until you wish to return, but I cannot in good conscience let you stay out here alone knowing there is a threat to your life.”

Amy bit her lip to hide her smile. She knew there was a beast in the cave. There were two of them. And yes, they were the most dangerous creatures out here, but she wasn’t scared of them one bit.

Yet, his words melted her icy resolve. He cared about her safety and wanted to protect her. Maybe under all that scary, tense muscle, and glowing red eyes, there was a good, kind man.

“I want to see Cane and Cole. Take me to them, please.”

Iron nodded, “Very well. Come.”

He turned to the pool room, but Amy stopped him before he entered the narrow passage.

“Wait,” She called, “There’s an easier way to get out.”

Iron followed her to the slab she used as a ramp and led him out into the thick forest above. Once they were both on the soft soil outside the entrance, she waited as Iron scanned the surrounding area with a deep frown.

“What is it?” She asked, sensing the restlessness inside Tope. He was close, watching them.

“The forest is still. There is something out here… watching us. We best return to the compound quickly.” Iron’s eyes narrowed as he spoke, his fiery gaze locked on the dark shadows in the trees.

Amy nodded, glancing behind her to the faint blue shimmer of Tope’s eyes in the distance.

She followed Iron in silence as her mind raced. Was this a good idea? Kisma felt sure that letting her go with them was okay. Like it was something they needed her to do, but she didn’t understand why.

After an hour, Iron paused and glanced up at the sky. She followed his gaze to see a small black craft hovering above them in the small clearing between tall trees. She watched as it lowered to the ground, expertly maneuvering between the thick branches until it landed on the soft mulch.

Iron gestured for her to move forward, guiding her to the entrance of the sleek black ship. It was about the size of a car from Earth, with dark tinted windows running all around the sides and front. A wide door opened on the side, showing the well-lit interior.

Large, plush seats ran along the far side of the transport in black and red material that looked a lot like leather.

Iron entered first, nodding his greeting to the huge male that sat behind the controls at the front, before he settled on one of the seats.

Amy followed him in, sitting down on the seat next to him.

With one word from Iron, the doors closed, and the craft lifted into the air so smoothly, that Amy wouldn’t have known they moved if she couldn’t see the trees through the windows.

“What about Cane and Cole?” She asked.
