You had me worried.
I know. I was worried too. But our mate saved me. Did you see her? She was magnificent.
Cane grinned, nodding to his brother. She was. The way she had fought with them, the way she protected Cole was nothing short of incredible.
Chapter Fifteen
Cole groaned as he shifted to get comfortable on the sand. The air was getting cooler and with his body so weak, a shiver ran through him.
He had come so close to losing his life only hours ago. It didn’t slip past him that if it was not for the black symbiote that still covered his chest, the wound to his lung, heart and other internal organs would have ended him.
He watched as Amy sat down beside Cane, curling her small body into his brother's chest as she kept a concerned eye on him. A stunning realization filled Cole’s mind at that moment.
Cane needed this female so much more than he did. He would never let her go, that was not an option, but his brother needed her close to him, touching him more than Cole did. All his life, Cole thought that if the day were to ever come where they found a female that was written for them, that he would be jealous of seeing her in Cane’s arms. Angry to know that she was being kissed or made love to by someone other than him. But looking at the two of them, he realized that he felt none of that emotion. All he felt was the waves of affection that poured off Cane.
He smiled to himself. This is what peace felt like. This is what all the warriors before spoke of when they said that their world became brighter after finding their mate.
Shifting his gaze away from Amy and Cane, he looked behind them at the two black beasts that lay sleeping on the sand. Shaking his head at how strange their lives had become in just one day, he wondered what would happen next.
With a heavy sigh, Iron cleared his throat. “Amy, will your beasts be willing to help us search for Ice and the others?”
She smiled at the male, “Ask them yourself.”
Iron’s gaze moved to the bright blue eyes watching him from over Cane’s shoulder.
“Tope, I need to ask for your assistance. My mate… Ice is missing. She and six of my warriors were taken while on a mission to find kidnapped children. I fear… I fear that the night beasts that roam the shadow valley may have killed them.”
“She lives,” A deep, crackling voice filled Cole’s head, sending a wave of unease through him. Amy and Cane sat up as well, frowning.
“Maku?”
“Yes.”
“Oh, wow. No wonder you don’t speak. Geez, you sound like a demon,” Amy said with a small grin, meeting Cole’s eyes over the fire.
“I did not wish to scare you.”
The black substance on Cole’s chest pulsed and grew warm at the sound of the male symbiote's voice.
Iron rose to his feet, “She lives? Where is she?”
“I will take you to her in the morning. There are many beasts on the sands now. It is not safe.”
Cole tensed, his eyes shooting up to scan the dunes around them. His mind still felt foggy from pain, but he pushed himself to block out the light of the fire and drew on his night vision.
“They are not here,” the female symbiote said in his head, “Maku has led them far away from us. Rest easy, cyborg. You need to heal.”
Tope rose from behind Cane, making his brother sit up and look behind him.
“I will keep watch through the night,” he said and strode away, vanishing in the darkness of the night.
“We all need rest,” Iron said, his face a mask of determination, “We leave at first light.”
Cane rose, helping Amy to her feet. They both came over to him, Cane easing him up.
Pain tore through his body again, sending a wave of dizziness through him.
With Cane and Amy’s help, they all went back to their tent and stepped in. When a large shape brushed past his leg, he looked down to see the other beast enter the tent, laying down in front of the entrance.
