Page 37 of Saving Her

We take off after Skull and Bull, ignoring the cops who are trying to contain us. I scan the area. T and King are beside me and what I see makes my stomach churn. Breaker’s bike is lying on its side, mangled from impact with a guardrail. There’s no sign of Break anywhere though. Across the road, Diego’s ride is lying on the side of the road. At first glance, it’s not really harmed, but that’s not what makes my heart stop beating before it shakily takes off again. Diego is spread out on the ground on one of those boards they use if they suspect a spinal injury. They’re doing chest compression and have one of those BVM bags—a manual resuscitator—over his mouth and my heart sinks. They’re giving him CPR and that’s never good. Skull is screaming in the background, but my gaze turns to Bull.

“Where is my son? That’s his bike over there.”

“Sir—”

“What hospital did you take him to?”

“Sir—”

“Tell me where my son is! I want to see him?—”

“Bull, let them speak,” Dad interjects, his hand locked down on Bull’s shoulder. I know he’s trying to contain him, so he doesn’t tear the paramedics apart. If they don’t tell him what he wants to know soon, though, he will unleash on them and nothing Dad can do will hold him back.

“We haven’t found your son yet, sir.”

“What do you mean you haven’t found him?” I ask, walking over to them, unable to stop myself from interjecting.

“He wasn’t here when we arrived. There’s a rescue team looking over the embankment, but we think the force of the crash threw him over the guardrail.”

“If that happened, you should have seen his body over there. Are you giving him medical treatment?”

The whole time we’re talking, Skull is in the background yelling questions and screaming as he pleads with Diego to breathe. I’m trying to blot it out. I have to concentrate on Breaker. Once we find him, we can help Skull. Right now, we have to find my brother.

“We can’t find a trace of him. We think his body may have rolled until it hit the lake.”

“The lake?” Bull asks, as my heart slams against my chest.

“Fontana Lake. They’re just beginning the investigation. Nothing is certain right now. The best thing you can do is for all of you to go back behind the containment area and wait for them to talk to you. That’s it. No one should be here but the authorities who are trained for this kind of thing to do their jobs,” the man says, and he doesn’t know how close to death he is. Bull’s face tints with as reddish color, betraying his anger and frustration. He looks like he might explode if he doesn’t get his hands on this guy.

“You need to go,” Dragon growls at the guy.

“Sir—”

Bull lunges for the guy and it’s all Dad can do to contain him. I notice King is there to help. T is standing by me, and I can feel the worry coming off him in waves. I’m probably broadcasting the same emotion. If the wreck did fling Breaker over the hill and he rolled into the creek, there’s no way he was conscious. He could have drowned, not having a chance to save himself. There’s so much shit running through my head that I’m having trouble breathing. I just keep seeing my woman’s face and wondering how I can explain any of this to her …

A horrible scream tears through the surrounding air. Every one of us turns together to see that the men have stopped working on Diego. Skull has Diego’s lifeless body pulled up against his chest, rocking back and forth as he lets out cries and screams that are torn from his soul. I can feel tears fill my eyes as I watch—transfixed—unable to tear my gaze away as Diego’s head rolls back and his lifeless eyes stare at me. Torch and a couple of the others gather around Skull, but no one tries to touch him. No one tries to take his son from his arms.

All we can do is share in his grief.

My head jerks as Bull collapses to his knees. “Oh God,” he cries, his face paler than I’ve ever seen it. This huge, mountain of a man, has always been one of the strongest most powerful men in our club. Bull’s our rock. Now, he looks like nothing more than a shell. “Oh, God,” he whimpers again as tears run down his face. Hell, most of us are crying. My head drops down as my heart shatters into pieces.

“How am I going to tell, Thea?” I whisper. T’s arm goes around my back in silent support. I look up at my brother to see he’s crying, just like me. “How am I going to tell her, T? This is going to kill her. How can I help my woman?”

T doesn’t answer. There is no answer. This is uncharted territory for both of us. Today we’ve lost one of our own and chances are Breaker is dead, too. We just stand where we’re at and unconsciously we’re all watching Skull clutching his son in his arms. I don’t know how long we stay there, but eventually, Torch and the others convince him to let Diego go, so they can transport him to the morgue. When that happens, I step closer. I can feel others follow me, but my gaze is glued on Diego.

“He’s been shot.”

I don’t realize that I say the words out loud until they’re out there, floating around us all, garnering Skull’s attention. His growl of anguish rents through the air. This explains the wreck. Our men were ambushed. I share a look with my father and the rest of our club. We will have justice for the lost members of our family. This will not go unpunished.

I just wish I knew how to help Thea and her family through this. Nothing will ever be the same. Our lives will never be the same. Everything is altered now and there’s not a damn thing any of us can do to change it. I can’t do anything for my beautiful Thea—nothing except give her vengeance, and I will. I’ll stop at nothing to make them all pay. These fuckers wanted a war with us? They’re not prepared for the hell we will unleash on them. As we stand there watching them load Diego, the rain begins to fall. I let each drop fuel the anger and pain inside of me. I know all our brothers are doing the same. The Feral Kings will cease to exist after this. We’ll personally tear apart each member until the streets are stained with their blood.

An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. They’re about to find out just how seriously we take that motto.

Chapter 26

Dragon

“I have to ride back to my woman and tell her that her son is dead, Dragon. My hijo precioso is gone. This will kill my woman. I am not going back until these fuckers are dead. I don’t care if you ride with us. All I know is that this is going to end today. I want their heads. I want their blood on my hands and I’m not waiting.”
