“I’m kinda tired and I have a headache. I think I’m gonna head home.”
“Really?” Keira looks worriedly at me. “Are you sure? Come inside first and get some water.”
“No, it’s okay. You go get that fine ass man. Let the others know I had to go? Tell Jenna I’ll text her when I get home.”
“I don’t think you should leave alone Brooke. Come inside and we can figure something out.”
The door opens and Stone looks out at us. He must have heard female voices and thought someone who shouldn’t be up here was trying to get to the band.
“What are you doing out here?” he asks.
“Brooke isn’t well, she wants to go home.”
“Everything alright?” Stone asks.
“A headache, probably dehydrated, and I’m tired. So yeah, don’t make a big deal.”
Stone looks at me again, then turns to the guy by the door. “Take her outside and get her a car, don’t leave until she’s safely inside.”
The guy nods. There is no point protesting, and in all honesty, I’m glad someone is making sure I get a ride home.
I thank Stone, hug Keira, and head back down the stairs, feeling pretty damn shit about myself.
Chapter Six
My last court appearance is done, all I’ve got left are a few filings and one deposition, then I’m heading off on vacation. I can’t believe it’s here already. It feels like only a couple of months ago Jenna showed up at my office and admitted she’d been texting with a rock god.
Never in a million years did I think it would come to this, at least not until I saw them together. I knew the first night I met Adam in McAllister’s he was gone for her.
The band flew out to Vietnam two days ago, where they’re doing a couple of shows. Jenna and Elsa got their flights last night. The day before, we’d had a quiet few drinks at Nick and Archer’s apartment, one last girl’s night.
Adam had been away the weekend before for his bachelor party. If you could call it that, fishing in Connecticut. Boring.
Not that Jenna’s was much more adventurous, but it had been a lot of fun. She had a pyjama party at her mom’s loft in Brooklyn.
We had food, dancing, a lot of alcohol, and Sandy arranged a sex toy demonstration from a company she found.
The two women were hilarious and arrived with wheeled suitcases full of things I’d never heard of, or realised people used on one another. The demonstrations had us crying with laughter.
Poor Meg was scandalised. It didn’t stop her from getting some things for her and Joey. We’d all walked away with plenty of gadgets and fun stuff to try out.
I want this week to be over so I can get out of work mode and into vacation excitement. I’m flying out with Meg and Joey in first class. I can afford my ticket, but Adam paid for all the guests’ travel. He isn’t half bad. I’ll admit.
Fantasizing about the trip and planning what I’m going to pack will not get my work finished, so I buckle down and get lost in paperwork.
I almost jump out of my skin when the door bursts open and Millie, my assistant, hurries in, looking like the world is about to end.
“Brooke.”
“What?” I ask in concern, Millie is usually unflappable.
“Your mother.”
My back straightens. “What about her?”
“She just got off the elevator. I saw her through the glass talking to Ella,” she hisses. Like my mother could overhear her. Wouldn’t surprise me if she did.
“Fuck.” What the hell is she doing here?
