“What are we doing? Playing the getting to know you game?” Brooke asks.

“Why not? That’s what people do when they’re in a new relationship.”

There is no mention of this not being a conventional new relationship.

I never cared about the chicks I’m sleeping with before. It’s always been a convenience, a fuck when I need it. After Madison, I figured anything long term is off the cards. Even if it wasn’t a relationship, it was more than I’ve had with a woman in a long time.

She needs to get the hell out of my head. It’s not fair to Brooke. What I have learnt so far has made me want to help her, not only with this fake relationship, but with everything else.

I prop myself up on my elbow, facing her so I can watch her as we talk.

Even freshly fucked, she looks perfect. Next time, I need to mess up that hair of hers.

“What do you do for fun? And I don’t mean spending time with Jenna and Elsa, going to bars or whatever. What relaxes you? Do you bake cakes, knit, make balloon animals?”

My chest tightens a little when she laughs. It’s good to see.

“I don’t have time for hobbies, if I’m not at work, at court or catching up on case files at home, I'm too tired for anything else. It takes a lot of brain capacity to do what I do, so when I can relax, I cuddle up on my couch and watch movies.”

“Somehow I can’t picture that. What’s your favourite movie?”

“Broadcast News,” she answers without hesitation.

“I’ve never heard of it.”

“It’s about a TV producer in DC. She’s so dedicated to her job she finds it difficult to let people in.”

Her nose scrunches, giving her a cute, confused look.

“It has a happy ending, but she chooses her job over a guy.”

“Fuck, that sounds depressing as shit,” I laugh.

“It’s a great movie, it’s good to see a woman taking a stand, not falling for the guy and letting her integrity and principals fall by the wayside. I always wanted to be a lawyer, but for a while, after watching that, I wanted to be a newsroom journalist.”

“Is that why you got so pissed at that woman tonight?”

“She did not have an ounce of integrity. All she wants is a sordid, non-existent story. She wants to put her own narrative on it without caring what it will do to the people she is making shit up about.

“I have no time for people like that, especially women trying to tear other women down. If Jenna weren’t secure in her relationship with Adam, that could have hurt her. It pisses me off that bitch had no regard for Jenna’s feelings.”

I love how she gets so indignant and protective. “It’s hot when you get defensive of your friends,” I grin at her. “And you stood up for Adam too.”

Her eyes narrow at me, but it’s clear she’s not angry.

“Okay, so you’re into feisty female leads and emulate them pretty well. What else?”

“Wait, this is quid pro quo. So what’s your favourite movie?”

“Titanic.”

“You liar,” she laughs and pushes my shoulder, so I roll back on the bed.

“What?” I push back up and tickle her. She shrieks and pushes my hands away, trying to wriggle across the bed, but I pull her back, laughing the whole time. “Okay, sorry, I won’t tickle you again. promise.”

She doesn’t look as if she believes me and scoots up on the bed a little higher. I stay where I am, my eyes level with her tits, which have come uncovered in our tussle. I reach out and trace one of her nipples, making her breath catch.

“And Titanic is my favourite film. The big question is, where do you stand on the door issue?”
