“That wasn’t very nice.” I looked at Lucy as I took the frying pan from the cabinet.
“What?” She opened the refrigerator and grabbed the orange juice.
“I invited her to have breakfast with us, and you basically kicked her out.”
“I’m sure she has a lot to do. Besides, it’s always just us for breakfast. She’s renting the guesthouse. She doesn’t live here. She has a kitchen. She can make her own breakfast.”
I narrowed my eyes at her. “I thought you liked Hannah.”
“I don’t know. Just because she’s staying in the guesthouse doesn’t mean I have to hang out with her or she has to hang out with us. Why did you rent out the guesthouse to her?”
I sighed as I flipped the French toast. “She needed a place to live and couldn’t find anything close to the flower shop she’s opening.”
“Still doesn’t make sense. It’s not like you need the money. I don’t understand why you rented it out. It’s weird having her here.”
“Why don’t you get to know her better, and then it won’t be so weird,” I said.
“I don’t want to. And if you plan on getting to know her better, leave me out of it.”
“Here’s your French toast.” I slid the plate across the island.
Since Lucy came to live with me, she’d never seen me with a woman. She knew I’d gone out but never met any of them. I wouldn’t allow it because they meant nothing to me, and it was usually only one or two dates. The way she just spoke about Hannah led me to believe she didn’t want her around or in our lives.
CHAPTER 18
Hannah
I drove to the shop, parked the car, and stepped inside. The loud and repetitive hammering sound filtered through the air, as did the sound of saws cutting wood.
“Morning, Hank.” I smiled.
“Morning, Hannah.”
“Wow. You guys got a lot done yesterday,” I spoke, looking around.
“Mr. Harbor gave us a deadline.” He smiled. “I know we’ve only been here a few days, but this is a great town.”
“It is, isn’t it?” I grinned.
The shop’s door opened, and I saw Alex walk in.
“Morning.” He walked over.
“Good morning, Mr. Harbor,” Hank said.
“Morning.” I smiled. It was the first time I’d seen him since yesterday morning when Lucy got home.
“It’s looking good in here. I hope you’re on schedule,” he said to Hank.
“We’re actually ahead of schedule, Mr. Harbor.”
“That’s what I like to hear. How about we go to Rooster’s and grab a coffee and a muffin,” he said, staring at me.
“I’d love to.”
“Great. We can walk.” He placed his hand on the small of my back.
“I bet Lucy was excited to go to school.”
