Page 7 of These Deadly Dreams

“Son of a bitch,” Kai curses. He looks down at himself, covered in flour and egg, and sighs.

“You’re a regular Martha Stewart aren’t you? Do you need help?” I ask, sliding off the stool to stand next to him.

He looks at me and relief flashes through his eyes. “Yes!”

He grabs my waist and slides me in front of him. Cade hands me another egg with a chuckle, and I crack both eggs without getting a single shell in the bowl. I look over my shoulder and grin.

“Easy peasy.”

“Whatever.” Kai pinches my ass and pushes me out of the way.

Cade mixes everything together and pours the batter in a cake pan. Once the cake is in the oven, he starts on the icing.

Kai, having had enough of honing his baking skills, sits with me at the island. We chat quietly about nothing in particular until Cade shoves a beater covered in chocolate icing under my nose.

“Well, sir, you certainly know the way to my heart.” I snatch the beater out of his hand and take the first lick of chocolatey goodness. I moan as the flavor of chocolate and espresso explodes in my mouth.

When I look up, I see both guys staring at me with wicked grins and a sparkle in their eyes.

“No need to be so seductive doing that,” Kai says as he adjusts himself in his pants.

I grin and scoop a dollop of icing from the beater with my finger and plop it on his nose. I watch as he goes cross-eyed to look at the blob of chocolate.

“Well, someone better lick that off of me.”

Cade and I both go in for the icing at the same time and all three of our heads collide.

“Ouch,” I laugh and rub my forehead, which I’m pretty sure ran into Cade’s chin.

“Is it really that good that you guys would fight over it?” Kai asks. He scrapes the icing off and licks it off his finger.

Cade and I double over with laughter as his top lip pulls back from his teeth and he shakes his head.

“That is disgusting! How do you eat that shit? And to think, you almost knocked each other out to get to it.”

“I think it was more the person it was on than the icing,” Cade says in a dangerously low voice. “Although, the icing is pretty damn good. I’d lick that off you all day, every day.”

I moan and nod my head. “Chocolate covered Kai dick. Where can I get me some of that?”

Kai chokes on a laugh and shakes his head at me.

“Come on you two,” Cade says. He shoos us out of the kitchen and into the hallway. “The cake needs to cool before I ice it, but I’ll be sure to save some for you, Ellis. I wouldn’t want to deprive you of your chocolate covered dick.”

All three of us are laughing as we round a corner and run into another vampire. Kai sobers immediately and pushes me behind him, but not before I’ve peaked the interest of the older vampire.

“Dad,” Kai says cooly.

“I haven’t seen you around much, son.” His cold, dark gaze travels to me. “I think I can see why.”

I shiver at the predatory look shining in those dark depths. He reaches a hand out and pushes Kai aside, and before I know it, I’m standing before Salvatore Thorne. King of the vampires.

Kai got his classically handsome facial features from his mother, but his height and build, and the dangerous glint in his eyes, he gets from his dad. Salvatore Thorne has dark brown eyes, so dark they’re almost black. His brown hair falls to his waist in a smooth, silken sheet. If it weren’t for the terrifying vibes he puts off, I would say he was attractive.

His dark gaze travels over my body and I see Kai stiffen out of my peripheral vision. Cade, standing behind me, steps closer and places his hand on my shoulder.

“We were just heading out, sir,” Cade says respectfully.

“Were you now? Well, I’m glad I caught you. I have business to discuss with you.” His lips curl in a cruel smile and his fangs lengthen as he runs his tongue over them. He hasn’t looked away from me. “That can wait though. There’s something more interesting standing in front of me.”
