“It is if you want it to be, ReRe. Are you mine now?” I gently graze my thumb over her cheek, heart pounding like it’s trying to beat its way out of my chest, as I wait for her answer.

“Yeah, Kai, I am. I’m yours.”

CHAPTER FORTY-FOUR

SERENA

The chipper ringing of Kai’s phone alarm drags me out of the deepest sleep I’ve had in weeks. My body feels relaxed and heavy, like it’s being weighed down by a pile of blankets. It takes a minute before my brain wakes up enough to realize the weight is actually Kai, wrapped around me like an octopus. Arms banded across my chest, leg thrown over my own, his face buried in my neck, and his warm breath tickling my skin. His erection is pressed against my ass, hard and insistent. Before falling asleep, I stripped down to my cami and thin cotton pajama shorts. Kai must have done the same because all I feel is the burning heat of his skin against mine.

After checking out of the motel, we find ourselves eating breakfast at a small roadside diner not too far from Arianna’s house. True to his word, Kai made sure to get a real meal into me before our next move, and after spending a whole day eating nothing but junk food, I’ve never been more grateful for a bowl of fresh fruit and some scrambled eggs.

I’m nervous about being out in public, unsure of how far Dominick’s reach is through the brotherhood of the police force. My body tenses every time the bell above the door jingles signaling the entrance of a new customer. Kai must feel the same way because neither of us take too long to eat our meals, ready to get out of the public eye as quickly as possible.

“You ready to bounce?” Kai asks once he pays our bill. I nod and follow him out of the restaurant. On our way to the address Arianna gave us for her rental, Kai stops at a local superstore. I look over at him in confusion, trying to gauge his plan.

“Why are we stopping here?”

“I thought you might want some clothes that fit and don’t smell like man-sweat. Also, I wanted to pick up a prepaid phone for you since Dom has yours. I don’t want you to not have a way to get in touch with your mom if I’m not around.”

I worry my bottom lip between my teeth, feeling guilty over Kai having to spend so much money on me.

“Hey, none of that.” He reaches over, gently freeing my lip from my teeth. “The only one of us that will be biting those luscious lips of yours will be me.”

“But—”

Kai stops me with a finger to the lips. “No buts, ReRe. I told you I’m going to take care of you. I should have gotten my head out of my ass and done this a long time ago, then we wouldn’t be in this situation now. But I can’t change the past. All I can do is do better for you in the future. Let me do this, okay?”

My eyes sting from tears suddenly threatening to fall. I can’t believe I never saw how good Kai was to me before. How could I be so desperate and stupid to fall for someone like Dominick when Kai was there all along? Blinking back the tears I give him a small smile.

“Fine, if you insist, spend your money on me, boo. I won’t argue.” The smile that lights up Kai’s face is almost blinding, and my heart swells seeing how happy taking care of me makes him.
