Page 91 of Worth the Risk
I’m late.
My period was never structured perfectly with a calendar. It fluctuated within ten days, so I didn’t think a thing about it being late. Then all hell broke loose with Jefferson, my hand injury, and going to Luca in Seattle. My missing period was the last thing on my mind.
A quick look at my phone calendar when I woke up to pee in the middle of the night confirmed my theory. If I am indeed pregnant, it happened in Boston.
If I had figured this out only a few days ago, I’d be a nervous wreck to tell Luca. But now, knowing he’s already thinking about babies, I’m only anxious to find out if I am pregnant.
As I pad barefoot down the stairs, I hear Luca talking.
“I don’t see why they want me to come in. I’ll pay the fines. Whatever. I’m done, Max. I don’t want to play another minute of hockey.”
Max responds, and Luca listens intently before sighing. “Why the GM wants to see me is ridiculous … it’s the owner who wants to see me? Max, give me some ideas here. Are they seeking some kind of legal recourse for me walking out?”
I creep silently toward Luca, unable to stay away from him. If the organization sues Luca, because of me, I’ll never forgive myself. My arms slide around Luca’s waist as I plaster my front to his back, terrified of what Max may say.
Luca stiffens slightly at my touch before relaxing into my embrace. When Max’s voice comes out much louder than I anticipated, making me jump, Luca chuckles and shows me his phone on speaker.
“Mr. Crawford didn’t tell me anything, man. He just said he wants you in his office as soon as possible. Oh, and he did ask you to bring Hannah.”
“Me? No!” I blurt out, horrified.
“Why I thought you wouldn’t be listening is beyond me. Hello, Hannah,” Max says dryly.
“Hi Max,” I whisper. My face heats with obvious embarrassment. I’ve never met Max in person, and I’ve only heard him speak on the phone once or twice. This is not how I expected my introduction to Luca’s agent to go.
“It’s okay, baby. Whatever it is, we’ll figure it out. Together,” Luca says quietly. “We’re a team now. You get me?”
I nod, biting my lip to avoid blurting out that I think I might be pregnant. Our team may be getting a tiny bit bigger in the foreseeable future, and that’s probably making me hormonally emotional about seeing the team owner today.
When Luca finishes his call with Max, he turns around and tugs me into his arms. “Mr. Crawford always seemed like a just and straightforward man. Very honest and understanding. I really don’t think he’d call us in for a meeting if it was about something bad. He’d have his attorneys do that.”
“Are you sure?” I ask quietly.
“I do. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if he had good news for us.”
“What kind of good news could he have?” I mutter.
“I know you’ve been enjoying a self-mandated social media sabbatical, Han, but I haven’t. And there have been a lot of stories released over the past couple of days about Woodward and his lackeys, your aunt included.”
My head whips up. “Seriously? What did they say?”
“That Woodward is under investigation for a couple things, and that the GM was involved. How he was having an extramarital affair with Caroline, and that she may have been essential in some of his more intense strategies when Woodward needed someone out.”
“Any idea on how long she was screwing him?”
“Dawson told me it may have been a few years.”
I feel the corner of my lip quirk up. “Dawson, huh.”
Luca scratches at his scruff. “Uh, yeah. Turns out he’s not such a bad guy. I mean, he’s still a jackass, but not a complete douche.”
“It’s wonderful that you can promote him from douche to jackass.”
“When it comes to the male hierarchy of disgustingness, I am a fair judge.”
“Obviously I have to ask where you fall on the hierarchy.”
“At the top.”
