“About what?” I ask, bringing my car to a stop once we reach the stop sign at the end of the road. There’s no one else around, so I stay put.

When we were teenagers, Brent was always nervous around girls. I saw it a little bit when he first arrived in town, but I’m not getting it anymore.

Brent clears his throat, and he looks right into my eyes. “I want to take you out on a date.”

The way his gaze pierces into mine makes my whole body tremble; it’s so intense.

“I’d like that,” I say, my words barely above a whisper.

A car pulls up behind me so I have no choice but to turn my attention back to the road.

“Does tomorrow night work?” Brent asks.

Out of all the millions of nights I’ve been free the past few years, tomorrow is not one of them. Groaning, I squeeze the steering wheel, wishing I could change my plans, but I can’t.

“Christy and I are having a sushi night tomorrow. I can’t cancel on her.”

Brent holds up his hands. “Oh no, I wouldn’t want you to.”

“How about the next night?” I inquire quickly. “I don’t have to work at the club.”

He smiles. “Perfect. I’ve been wanting to spend time with you.”

We pull into the hotel parking lot, and I park the car. “It’s funny; I’ve been wanting to spend time with you, too,” I confess. That smirk of his is back, and I can’t look away from him.

It’s as if time stands still in this moment. One minute, I’m staring into his eyes, and the next, I feel his lips on mine. I never thought he would be the one to initiate the kiss first. His movements are gentle but demanding, as well. I open my lips further, allowing him to take what he wants. However, all too soon, he slowly pulls away. I want more . . . so much more.

“I’ll see you Monday night, Scotlyn,” he breathes, his lips grazing mine.

“Okay,” is all I can say back.

He gets out of my car and smiles at me over his shoulder before disappearing into the hotel. I’m excited about spending time with him, but it also saddens me. His being here is only temporary. Someday soon, I’ll have to say goodbye to him.

“Oh my God, this sushi is to die for. I could eat it all day, every day,” Christy says, moaning as she eats the last piece of her Somerset roll.

Laughing, I toss the last crab rangoon into my mouth and chew it slowly, savoring it.

“I could, too,” I reply in all honesty.

We finish up in the restaurant and head back to my apartment for ice cream. She has a pint of Half-Baked and I have Americone Dream waiting for me in the freezer. Once we arrive at my place, I grab the ice cream while she fetches us some spoons. We sit on the couch and devour our treats within minutes.

“I’m going to have to exercise for four hours just to burn off half of what I just ate,” I say, leaning my head back on the couch.

Christy giggles. “You could totally burn it off other ways.”

I know what she’s implying.

I look over at her and roll my eyes. “How? The Dark Room?”

Christy fiddles with her long, blonde braid and shrugs. “Hey, it’s an option. Don’t you at least want to try it one time?”

I’ve been dying to tell her that I’ve already been in it. She’s my best friend and I should be able to tell her anything and everything. But there are rules at Society X that can’t be broken. I don’t want to lose my job or risk Christy losing hers.

Memories of that night flash through my mind. The guy was a virgin and I totally got off on it. Do I want to do it again? Yes and no. I wouldn’t want to deflower another virgin.

Christy moves closer, her eyes searching mine. “You’ve already been in the Dark Room, haven’t you?”

I smack her arm playfully. “Girl, we can’t talk about this! It’s against the rules. I don’t want us getting kicked out of the club.”
