“It shouldn’t be different.”

“As true as that may be, it doesn’t change the fact that I’m a vampire.”

My hand rested on his forearm, feeling all the cords underneath my fingertips, the tightness of his muscular body. “If you don’t want me to stay, then be a man and tell me.”

His eyes brightened noticeably, and a subtle smile moved on to his lips. “Baby, you know I never want you to leave.”

My heart clenched again, loving the way he called me baby, loving how good his big hands felt on my body. To feel a beautiful man’s possession was the sexiest thing in the world.

“And you damn well know that.” He tightened me to him, his lips catching mine for a soft kiss, the kind that made my body melt into the sheets. It was slow and tender, but breathtaking, nevertheless. He grabbed my ass with his big hand before he rolled me onto my back, opening me up so he could take me again. He guided himself inside then sank nice and slow, his eyes locked on mine with that potent possession. “Don’t you?”

My nails were deep in his back, our bodies grinding together.

His mouth moved to my ear. “Say it, baby.”

Fuck, I was already going to come. “Yes…I know.”

“Know what?”

“How much you want me…”

He started to move harder. “Attagirl.”

When I opened my eyes, Aurelias was still beside me. We’d separated sometime during the night, but he was still close, close enough that I could hear him breathe. I took him in for a moment, feeling the morning light in the crack between the curtains. A veil of peace swept through me, my body on a cloud and my mind still in the land of dreams.

It was the nicest morning I’d had in a long time.

He opened his eyes a moment later, looking right into my face, his eyes soft from being half asleep. The sheets were at his waistline, his body still hard despite his relaxation. His hand snaked to me across the mattress until he grabbed me and pulled me close, bringing me right up against him. “You look beautiful in the morning.”

“Funny,” I said. “I thought the same thing about you.”

He hiked my leg over his hip and closed his eyes again, his body pressed into mine, our breaths in sync.

I wasn’t tired, but I was so relaxed I could fall right back to sleep. It was easy to forget our world was on the brink of collapse when we were wrapped together like this, the morning light bringing a warmth to the room that rivaled a fire.

Our serendipity was destroyed when he let out an annoyed sigh.

“What?”

“You should get dressed.”

“Why—”

Knock. Knock. Knock.

“That’s why,” he said. “Come on.”

A guard’s voice was heard from downstairs. “Open up. By order of the king.”

“Oh fuck.” I grabbed my clothes off the floor and dressed as quickly as possible.

Aurelias remained calm, taking his time pulling on his clothes before his fingers moved through his hair.

“I can’t believe this.”

He said nothing, but his look said it all. I told you so.
