“Open your legs like you fucking want me to bang you until the morning.”

I’ve read those words more than a few times, but they’ve never sounded hotter…or dirtier.

He flips through the pages, his face a mix of surprise and horror. “You’ve even made notes.”

“That’s called annotation.”

“Is there going to be an exam on this porn stuff?”

“Okay, enough. It’s not porn, it’s a comfort read.”

“This is giving me no comfort. If anything, it’s making me uneasy, knowing I was the one who introduced you to your first fiction book, only to see it has evolved into this.” He continues to hold the book above his head.

“You’re dumb. There’s more angst and swoon in that book than spice.” I cross my arms over my chest, abandoning my attempt to snatch the book from his grasp.

“You cannot convince me of anything after what I just saw. I recommend stashing this either beneath your bed or on the highest shelves, making sure Poppy and Sage can’t get their hands on it.” His attention then shifts to the two cartons. “How many of these are like this?”

I push him out of the way. “You’re such a prude. When my sisters are old enough, I’ll be the one to introduce them to their first romance novel.”

“That’s certainly one way to become the favorite sister.” He smirks, and thankfully, before he can say anything more, the oven timer dings.

“Are you going to feed me?”

Carter drops the book into my hand, leaving it open at a page that has lots of annotations in red—a color I use for spicy scenes.

“Yes, you wouldn’t want me to discover other methods of keeping that mouth busy,” he mumbles almost to himself, and my mouth goes bone dry.

He seriously didn’t just say that!

Carter shakes his head before striding into the kitchen, while I tuck the book securely into the bookshelf. For some reason, I can’t suppress my smile.

“I’m genuinely afraid of you, Merida. I’m not sure if I even want to uncover all the things you’ve been up to in the last four years.”

CARTER

“Since when do you need the entire morning to get ready?” I try to make a joke as Merida steps out of her door, dressed in a knee-length plaid skirt and a white sweater. But it’s her black boots that have a rush of warmth flooding in my veins.

“Since I found out that I love to dress up.” She does a semi-twirl and it becomes impossible to ignore the way my cock stirs behind my zipper.

My eyes caress the gentle curve of her throat, tracing a tantalizing path down to her lithe thighs. My heart rate picks up, and I clench my fists in frustration at my lack of control. When Merida glides past me where I’m leaning against my door, I follow her like a lovesick puppy.

We step into the elevator, and I can’t tear my eyes away from her. She gazes at her reflection in the mirror, adjusting her lipstick. The confined space fills with the smell of her jasmine perfume, and for a change, I welcome the scent, even inhaling deeper. Before my fingers tingle with the urge to touch her and feel the softness of her skin, the door opens, bringing back my sanity.

Sam greets us with a friendly wave and a wide, welcoming smile. “Good morning, Mr. King, Merida. I hope you both have a wonderful day.”

“Thank you, Sam. What do you think of my look today? Do you think I wasted my time getting ready?” She chuckles, and that sound reverberates deep within my chest, causing it to swell with a matching warmth.

“Not at all. You look absolutely stunning, as always, honey.”

Damn it, Sam, quit flirting, will you?

“You’re the best, Sam. You sure know how to give compliments, unlike some people around here.” Merida steps forward, but before she can hug the man, I hold her back by the brown leather strap of her handbag.

“We’re running late. Bye, Sam.” I don’t let go of Mere as I pull her toward the exit, while Sam grins at us like a clown.

“Hey, I want to hug him good morning.”
