Dare

Having decided to move forward with the party, I started making phone calls to invite everyone.

“Of course, Melody and I will be there. Mum’s the word. But are you sure you want to do this?”

I sat heavily on the closest counter stool in the kitchen. Even Jack, Ace’s brother, had no faith in the plan. “I do.” It’d be a hassle coordinating everyone and keeping the secret, but Ace deserved this.

“What about JJ?”

“I can arrange a sitter here, but I thought I’d hold it early enough for dinner, then you can leave when he gets tired. Bunny will be here. I can ask Finn and Josey what they plan on doing.”

“No worries, D. Melody will coordinate. Good thing the kiddos are still little, don’t have to worry about school yet. Although…summer vacation, right?”

“Yes, thank God. We’ll have extra help with our high school graduates. So glad I started that plan.” Hiring a pre-college freshman interested in medicine or pharmacy gave us breathing room for our regular pharmacy technicians to take vacations.

“Smart. Speaking of school, are you inviting Ben and Sawyer?”

“They’re my next call.”

Though Ben was Jack’s best friend, after I’d met Sawyer at one of the local medieval events, he and I hit it off. Ace and I had thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, helping to push Ben and Sawyer together at Ben’s birthday party. “Hot Cop” Sawyer stripping for Ben had to be about the best party I’d ever attended.

I hoped this surprise party for Ace topped it, though, especially since the night of our anniversary I’d decided, Hell, yes! I want this man to be my forever. I’d surprise not just Ace, but as many friends and family as I could when I got down on one knee and popped the question.
